Aliphatische Alkylamine reagieren als Brønsted-Lowry-Basen, also als Protonenakzeptoren, und bilden die konjugierte Säure, die Alkylammonium-Ionen.
Der pKa-Wert des Alkylammoniumions gibt die relative Basizität des Amins an, ein höherer pKa-Wert bedeutet eine schwächere konjugierte Säure und eine entsprechend stärkere Base. Alkylamine sind also stärkere Basen als Ammoniak.
Die höhere Basizität von Alkylaminen resultiert aus den induktiven Effekten der Alkylgruppen und den Solvatationseffekten, die die entsprechenden Ammoniumionen durch Wasserstoffbrückenbindungen stabilisieren.
Elektronenabgebende Alkylgruppen stabilisieren das Ammoniumion durch partielle Delokalisierung der positiven Ladung und erhöhen dadurch seinen pKa-Wert.
Der pKa-Wert steigt jedoch aufgrund des verminderten Solvatationseffekts nicht wie erwartet von sekundären zu tertiären Alkylammoniumionen an.
Eine erhöhte sterische Behinderung im tertiären Alkylammonium-Ion verringert die Machbarkeit der Solvatation.
Da induktive und Solvatationseffekte das sekundäre Alkylammoniumion gleichermaßen stabilisieren, ist sein pKa-Wert höher als der der entsprechenden Primär- und Tertiärionen.

Basicity of Aliphatic Amines

Amine können sich wie Brønsted-Lowry-Basen verhalten, indem sie ein Proton von der Säure aufnehmen und entsprechende konjugierte Säuren bilden. Aufgrund eines freien Elektronenpaares nichtbindender Elektronen können aliphatische Amine auch als Lewis-Basen wirken, indem sie eine kovalente Bindung mit einem Elektrophil eingehen.

Zur Messung der Basizität von Aminen werden im Allgemeinen zwei Konventionen verwendet. Die erste definiert K_b als die Basizitätskonstante für die Deprotonierungsreaktion von Wasser durch das Amin, wie in Abbildung 1 dargestellt. Herkömmlicherweise weist ein niedrigerer K_b auf eine höhere Basizität des Amins hin. Ammoniak und Methylamin haben beispielsweise Basizitätskonstanten von 4,7 bzw. 3,3.

Bei der anderen Konvention wird die Basizität der Amine mit der Säure der entsprechenden konjugierten Säure korreliert. Je höher die Säurekonstante (pK_a) der konjugierten Säure ist, desto höher ist die Basizität des Amins, aus dem die konjugierte Säure gebildet wurde. Wie beispielsweise in Abbildung 2 gezeigt, haben die konjugierten Säuren von Ammoniak, Methylamin und Ethylamin pK_a-Werte von 9,26, 10,64 bzw. 10,75. Dies weist auf die höhere Basizität von Ethylamin hin, gefolgt von Methylamin und Ammoniak.

Aliphatische Amine sind basischer als Ammoniak, da die am N-Atom gebundenen Alkylgruppen über die Fähigkeit verfügen, Elektronen freizusetzen. Die Alkylgruppe stabilisiert die konjugierte Säure, indem sie ihre positive Ladung verteilt; Dadurch wird die Basizität von Aminen erhöht. Es ist zu erwarten, dass die tertiären Amine mit drei Alkylgruppen basischer sind als die primären Amine mit nur einer Alkylgruppe. Dies gilt jedoch nur in der Gasphase, wo wir den Säuregehalt der konjugierten Säuren Ammoniak, Methylamin, Dimethylamin und Trimethylamin in der unten aufgeführten Reihenfolge sehen.

Daher ist Ammoniak die schwächste Base und Trimethylamin die stärkste Base in der Gasphase. Die Basizität von Aminen in der wässrigen Phase wird jedoch auch durch die Solvatation der entsprechenden konjugierten Säuren in Wasser beeinflusst. Daher verfügen die konjugierten Säuren tertiärer Amine trotz ihrer drei an das N-Atom gebundenen Alkylgruppen nur über ein H-Atom, das für die intermolekulare H-Bindung mit Wasser zur Verfügung steht. Im Gegensatz dazu verfügen konjugierte Säuren primärer Amine über drei H-Atome für intermolekulare Wasserstoffbrückenbindungen mit Wasser. Daher verlaufen die pK_a-Werte der konjugierten Säuren von Aminen in einer wässrigen Lösung wie in Abbildung 3 dargestellt.

how aliphatic amines act as bases

Aliphatic amines act as bases because the nitrogen atom can accept a proton from an acid. They can also behave as Lewis bases, since the nitrogen lone pair can form a covalent bond with an electrophile. These properties make amines useful examples of basic behavior in organic chemistry.

Amine basicity is commonly described in two ways. One method uses the basicity constant, K b, for the reaction in which the amine removes a proton from water. A lower K b means a stronger base. By this measure, methylamine is more basic than ammonia, with K b values of 3.3 and 4.7, respectively.

A second method compares the p K a values of the conjugate acids of amines. In this case, a higher p K a means the original amine is more basic. The conjugate acids of ammonia, methylamine, and ethylamine have p K a values of 9.26, 10.64, and 10.75. This shows that ethylamine is the most basic of the three, followed by methylamine and then ammonia.

Aliphatic amines are more basic than ammonia because alkyl groups push electron density toward the nitrogen atom. This effect helps stabilize the conjugate acid by spreading out its positive charge. It is easy to expect tertiary amines to be the most basic, since they have three alkyl groups, but that trend is only true in the gas phase.

In the gas phase, the conjugate acids follow the order [NH4]+ &gt; [MeNH3]+ &gt; [Me2NH2]+ &gt; [Me3NH]+ in acidity. That means ammonia is the weakest base and trimethylamine is the strongest base there. In water, however, solvation changes the trend. Tertiary amine conjugate acids have only one hydrogen for hydrogen bonding with water, while primary amine conjugate acids have three.

Because of this, aqueous basicity follows a different order from the gas phase. The conjugate acids of amines in water show p K a values that reflect the balance between alkyl electron donation and solvation. Secondary amines often show the best balance of these two effects.
