HNO2 ist eine schwächere Säure im Vergleich zu HNO3. Es ionisiert zu Hydronium- und Nitritionen und hat einen pK-Wert von 3,37.
Da HNO2 instabil ist, wird es in situ hergestellt, indem NaNO2 mit einer starken Mineralsäure, wie Salz- oder Schwefelsäure, umgesetzt wird.
Unter dem gleichen sauren Zustand wird die -OH-Gruppe der salpetrigen Säure protoniert, um ein Oxoniumion zu erhalten, das ein Wassermolekül verliert, um das Nitrosylkation oder das Nitrosoniumion zu erzeugen.
Das elektrophile Nitrosonium-Ion kann dann mit dem nukleophilen Amin Stickstoff reagieren.
Die Reaktion von HNO2 mit primären, sekundären und tertiären aliphatischen und aromatischen Aminen führt zu unterschiedlichen Produkten.
Zum Beispiel ergeben primäre Amine bei Behandlung mit HNO2 Diazoniumsalze, während sekundäre Amine N-Nitrosamine ergeben.
Bei der Reaktion mit HNO2 werden tertiäre aliphatische Amine protoniert, um wasserlösliche Salze und N-Nitrosoammoniumverbindungen zu erhalten. Im Gegensatz dazu durchlaufen tertiäre Arylamine eine elektrophile aromatische Substitution zu aromatischen C-Nitroso-Verbindungen.

Salpetrige Säure und Salpetersäure sind zwei Arten stickstoffhaltiger Säuren, von denen salpetrige Säure schwächer ist als Salpetersäure. Salpetrige Säure mit einem pK_a-Wert von 3,37 ionisiert in Wasser zu einem Nitrition und dem Hydroniumion.

Die salpetrige Säure ist instabil. Daher wird es in situ aus einer Lösung von Natriumnitrit und kalten wässrigen Säuren wie Salz- oder Schwefelsäure gebildet. In einer sauren Lösung wird die OH-Gruppe der salpetrigen Säure protoniert, um ein Oxoniumion zu ergeben, gefolgt von einem Wasserverlust, um ein Nitrosoniumion zu bilden. Nitrosoniumion ist ein hochreaktives Elektrophil, das mit dem nukleophilen Stickstoffatom eines Amins reagiert.

Salpetrige Säure kann mit verschiedenen Klassen von Aminen, wie primären, sekundären und tertiären aliphatischen oder aromatischen Aminen, zu unterschiedlichen Produkten reagieren. nitrous acid reactions with amines

Nitrous acid reacts with amines in acidic conditions, and the products depend on the type of amine. It is a key nitrogen-containing acid, but it is weaker than nitric acid. Nitrous acid has a pKa of 3.37, so it ionizes in water to form nitrite ion and hydronium ion.

Nitrous acid is unstable, so it is made in situ, or formed in the reaction mixture as needed. A sodium nitrite solution is combined with a cold aqueous acid such as hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid. In acid, the –OH group of nitrous acid is protonated first. This gives an oxonium ion, which then loses water to form nitrosonium ion.

Nitrosonium ion is a highly reactive electrophile, meaning it seeks electrons. It reacts with the nucleophilic nitrogen atom of an amine. Primary amines form diazonium salts in this reaction, and this process is called diazotization. Secondary amines give N-nitrosamines instead.

The outcome also changes with tertiary amines. Tertiary aliphatic amines form water-soluble salts and N-nitrosoammonium compounds. Tertiary arylamines react by electrophilic aromatic substitution to make aromatic C-nitroso compounds.
