Es sei daran erinnert, dass primäre Arylamine bei der Diazotisierung Arendiazoniumsalze als synthetisch nützliche Zwischenprodukte liefern. Die Diazoniumgruppe ist eine gute Abgangsgruppe und kann zur Erzeugung von substituierten Benzolen verwendet werden.
Zum Beispiel werden bei der Sandmeyer-Reaktion Arendiazoniumsalze mit Kupfer(I)-Salzen des Halogenids oder Cyanids behandelt, um Arylhalogenide bzw. Arylnitrile zu bilden.
Arylnitrile können weiter hydrolysiert werden, um Carbonsäuren zu erhalten.
Bei Sandmeyer-Reaktionen ist jedoch eine direkte Installation von Fluor und Jod auf einem aromatischen Ring nicht möglich, da Fluor heftig reagiert, während Jod sehr langsam reagiert.
Zur Fluorierung werden die Arendiazoniumsalze mit HBF4-Säure behandelt, um über Schiemann-Reaktionen Arylfluorid zu erzeugen.
Bei der Jodierung führt die Behandlung mit KI zur Bildung von Aryliodid.
Insgesamt beinhaltet die allgemeine Sequenz zur Synthese von substituierten Benzolen die Nitrierung von Benzol, gefolgt von der Reduktion zur Gewinnung von Aminobenzolen, die einer Diazotisierung und schließlich einer Substitution unterzogen werden können.

Arendiazonium-Substitutionsreaktionen treten auf, wenn die Diazoniumgruppe durch verschiedene funktionelle Gruppen wie Halogenide, Hydroxyl, Nitril usw. ersetzt wird. Beispielsweise reagieren Arendiazoniumsalze mit Kupfer(I)-Salzen von Chlorid, Bromid oder Cyanid unter Bildung entsprechender Arylchloride, Bromide und Nitrile. Diese Reaktionen werden Sandmeyer-Reaktionen genannt. Obwohl der Mechanismus dieser Reaktion kompliziert ist, wie in Abbildung 1 dargestellt, wird angenommen, dass sie über ein Arylkupfer-Zwischenprodukt abläuft.

Die Hydrolyse von Arylnitrilen zu Carbonsäuren ist sehr einfach. In diesem Zusammenhang spielt die Sandmeyer-Reaktion eine entscheidende Rolle bei der Umwandlung von Arylaminen in substituiertes Benzonitril, wie in Abbildung 2 dargestellt.

Sandmeyer-Reaktionen werden nicht zur Herstellung von Arylfluoriden und Aryliodiden verwendet. Bei Arylfluoriden reagieren die Arendiazoniumsalze mit Fluorborsäure zu Diazoniumfluorborat in Form eines ausgefällten Salzes. Wie in Abbildung 3 dargestellt, werden diese Rückstände isoliert, getrocknet und erhitzt, bis sie sich unter Bildung der entsprechenden Arylfluoride zersetzen. Solche Reaktionen werden Schiemann-Reaktionen genannt. In ähnlicher Weise reagieren Arendiazoniumsalze mit Kaliumiodid unter Bildung von Aryliodiden.

Arenediazonium salts can be used to make substituted aromatic compounds. In these reactions, the diazonium group is replaced by other functional groups such as halides, hydroxyl, and nitrile. The transcript focuses on how this chemistry is used to form aryl chlorides, bromides, fluorides, iodides, and nitriles.

When arenediazonium salts react with copper(I) salts of chloride, bromide, or cyanide, they form the corresponding aryl chloride, aryl bromide, or aryl nitrile. These are called Sandmeyer reactions. The exact mechanism is complex, but it is thought to proceed through an aryl copper intermediate.

Aryl nitriles are especially useful because they can be hydrolyzed to carboxylic acids very easily. For that reason, the Sandmeyer reaction is an important route from aryl amines to substituted benzonitriles. This makes it a practical step in aromatic synthesis.

Sandmeyer reactions are not used to make aryl fluorides or aryl iodides. To form aryl fluorides, the arenediazonium salt reacts with fluoroboric acid to give diazonium fluoroborate as a precipitated salt. The solid is then isolated, dried, and heated until it decomposes to form the aryl fluoride. This process is called the Schiemann reaction. Arenediazonium salts can also react with potassium iodide to form aryl iodides.
