Der menschliche Körper ist ein komplexes System, das in zwei Zweigen der Biologie untersucht wird – der Anatomie und der Physiologie.
Die Anatomie befasst sich mit der Struktur des Körpers und der Organisation verschiedener Körperteile. Sie wird weiter in grobe und mikroskopische Anatomie unterteilt.
Bei der Grob- oder Makroanatomie werden große Körperteile wie Herz und Knochen untersucht, ohne ein Mikroskop zu verwenden. 
Im Gegensatz dazu untersucht die mikroskopische Anatomie oder Mikroanatomie einzelne Zellen und Gewebe mit dem Mikroskop.
Die Physiologie untersucht, wie verschiedene Teile des Körpers funktionieren und welche Mechanismen diese Funktionen antreiben. Basierend auf dem Organisationsgrad kann die Physiologie weiter in molekulare, zelluläre und systemische Physiologie eingeteilt werden. 
Die systemische Physiologie kann weiter nach Organsystemen unterteilt werden. Zu diesen Abteilungen gehören die kardiovaskuläre Physiologie, die das Herz- und Blutsystem untersucht, und die Neurophysiologie, die das Nervensystem untersucht.
Das Prinzip der Komplementarität von Struktur und Funktion besagt, dass die anatomischen Strukturen des Menschen seine physiologische Funktion unterstützen. Zum Beispiel enthalten Muskeln kontraktile Zellen, die es ihnen ermöglichen, den Körper zu bewegen.

Überblick über anatomie und physiologie

Die menschliche Anatomie ist das wissenschaftliche Studium der Strukturen des Körpers. Einige dieser Strukturen sind sehr klein und können nur mit Hilfe eines Mikroskops beobachtet und analysiert werden. Andere größere Strukturen können leicht gesehen, manipuliert, gemessen und gewogen werden. Das Wort „Anatomie“ stammt aus dem Griechischen, was „zerschneiden“ bedeutet. Die menschliche Anatomie wurde erstmals durch die Beobachtung der äußeren Körper und der Wunden von Soldaten und anderen Verletzungen studiert. Später durften Ärzte die Körper der Toten sezieren, um ihr Wissen zu erweitern. Bei der Sektion eines Körpers werden die Strukturen auseinander geschnitten, um ihre physikalischen Eigenschaften und ihre Beziehung zueinander zu beobachten. Die Sektion wird immer noch in medizinischen Schulen, Anatomiekursen und Pathologie Laboren verwendet. Es wurden jedoch mehrere Abbildungsverfahren entwickelt, um Strukturen in lebenden Menschen zu beobachten. Diese Verfahren ermöglichen es Medizinern, Strukturen im Körper, wie einen bösartigen Tumor oder einen gebrochenen Knochen, sichtbar zu machen. Anatomen verfolgen zwei allgemeine Ansätze für das Studium der Körperstrukturen: regionale und systematische. Die regionale Anatomie ist das Studium der Wechselbeziehungen aller Strukturen in einer bestimmten Körperregion, wie zum Beispiel dem Bauchbereich. Das Studium der regionalen Anatomie hilft uns, die Wechselbeziehungen der Körperstrukturen zu verstehen, wie beispielsweise Muskeln, Nerven, Blutgefäße und andere Strukturen zusammenarbeiten, um eine bestimmte Körperregion zu versorgen. Im Gegensatz dazu ist die systematische Anatomie das Studium der Strukturen, die ein diskretes Körpersystem bilden - das heißt, eine Gruppe von Strukturen, die zusammenarbeiten, um eine einzigartige Körperfunktion zu erfüllen. Zum Beispiel würde eine systematische anatomische Studie des Muskelapparats alle Skelettmuskeln des Körpers berücksichtigen. Während die Anatomie sich mit der Struktur beschäftigt, befasst sich die Physiologie mit der Funktion. Die menschliche Physiologie ist das wissenschaftliche Studium der Chemie und Physik der Körperstrukturen und wie sie zusammenarbeiten, um die lebenserhaltenden Funktionen zu unterstützen. Ein Großteil des Studiums der Physiologie konzentriert sich auf die Tendenz des Körpers zur Homöostase. Human anatomy studies the structures of the body. Some body structures are so small that they can only be seen and examined with a microscope. Others are large enough to be viewed, handled, measured, and weighed.

The word anatomy comes from a Greek root meaning “to cut apart.” Early study of the human body began with observing the outside of the body and the injuries seen in soldiers and other patients. Later, physicians were allowed to dissect dead bodies to learn more. Dissection means cutting a body apart to study its parts and how they relate to one another. It is still used in medical schools, anatomy courses, and pathology labs.

Today, several imaging methods also help scientists and clinicians study the living body. These techniques make it possible to see internal structures without dissection. They can show problems such as a cancerous tumor or a fractured bone.

Anatomists use two main approaches. Regional anatomy studies all of the structures in one body area, such as the abdomen. This helps show how muscles, nerves, blood vessels, and other parts work together in that region. Systemic anatomy studies one body system at a time, such as the muscular system, and looks at all of the skeletal muscles in the body.

Physiology focuses on function rather than structure. It is the scientific study of the chemistry and physics of body structures and how they work together to support life. Much of physiology centers on homeostasis, which is the maintenance of steady internal conditions in living things.

Physiology also uses observation, including the naked eye and microscopes. It includes manipulations and measurements as well. Modern physiology often depends on carefully designed laboratory experiments that reveal how body structures and chemical compounds work.
