Directional Terms

Richtungsbegriffe bilden die relative Position von Körperteilen ab, wobei die anatomische Standardposition als Referenz dient.
In dieser aufrechten Haltung ist die Vorderseite des Körpers die vordere oder ventrale Seite und der Rücken die hintere oder dorsale Seite. Zum Beispiel befindet sich das Herz vor der Wirbelsäule und hinter dem Brustbein.
Die Begriffe "superior" und "inferior" beziehen sich auf die Position der Körperteile relativ zu Kopf und Füßen. Die Brust ist höher als die Knie, aber untergeordnet zum Kopf.
Medial und lateral zeigen die Position zur Mittellinie des Körpers hin oder von ihr weg an. Die Brust liegt medial zu den Armen, die Ohren seitlich zum Kopf.
Proximal und distal bezeichnen die Körperteile, die näher oder weiter vom Rumpf entfernt sind. Zum Beispiel befindet sich der Ellenbogen proximal zum Handgelenk und der Knöchel distal zum Knie.
Ebenso bedeutet der Begriff oberflächlich, näher an der Oberfläche, während tief bedeutet, von der Oberfläche weg zu sein. Die Haut ist oberflächlich bis zu den Knochen, während das Herz tief ist.

Richtungsbegriffe sind essenziell, um die relative Lage verschiedener Körperstrukturen zu beschreiben. Ein Anatom könnte beispielsweise ein Gewebeband als „inferior“ zu einem anderen beschreiben, oder ein Arzt könnte einen Tumor als „superficial“ zu einer tieferen Körperstruktur beschreiben. Bei diesen Begriffen werden häufig paarweise Vergleichsbegriffe verwendet, um die relative Lage eines Körperteils zu einem anderen zu bestimmen, oder um Körpergewebe zu beschreiben, z.B. die tieferen von den oberflächlich vorhandenen, in Bezug auf die aufrechte anatomische Standardreferenzposition des Körpers. 

 Begriffe wie „anterior“ oder „ventral“ beschreiben die Vorderseite oder die Richtung zur Vorderseite des Körpers. Die Zehen sind anterior zum Fuß. Im Gegensatz dazu beschreibt „posterior“ oder „dorsal“ den Rücken oder die Richtung zum Rücken des Körpers. Zum Beispiel ist der Musculus popliteus posterior zur Patella. Das gegensätzliche Paar von Begriffen „superior“ und „inferior“ bezieht sich auf eine Position relativ zum Kopf bzw. zu den Füßen. „Superior“ bezieht sich auf eine Position oberhalb oder höher als ein anderer Teil des Körpers. Die Orbitae sind superior zum Musculus orbicularis oris. Im Gegensatz dazu beschreibt „inferior“ eine Position unterhalb oder tiefer als ein anderer Teil des Körpers, nahe oder in Richtung auf den Schwanz (beim Menschen das Steißbein oder der unterste Teil der Wirbelsäule). Das Becken ist inferior zum Abdomen. 

 Ähnlich zeigen die Begriffe medial und lateral die Lage zur Körpermittellinie hin oder von ihr weg an. „Lateral“ beschreibt die Seite oder die Richtung zur Seite des Körpers. Der Daumen (pollex) ist lateral zu den Fingern. „Medial“ beschreibt die Mitte oder die Richtung zur Mitte des Körpers. Der Hallux ist der mediale Zeh. 

 Der Begriff „intermediate“ wird unabhängig davon häufig verwendet und bezeichnet eine Struktur, die zwischen zwei Strukturen liegt. Zum Beispiel ist das Colon transversum ein Intermediate zwischen dem Colon ascendens und dem Colon descendens. Außerdem liegt das Schlüsselbein intermediate zwischen der Schulter und dem Brustbein. 

 Die andere Gruppe von relativen Begriffen umfasst proximal und distal, wobei ersterer die Position der Extremität näher am Körperstamm beschreibt und letzterer auf eine Position weiter vom Körperstamm entfernt hinweist. Zum Beispiel ist der Oberarm proximal zum Unterarm, und das Bein ist distal zum Oberschenkelknochen. 

 Ebenso beschreibt der Begriff „superficial“ eine Position, die näher an der Körperoberfläche liegt. Die Haut ist superficial zu den Knochen. „Deep“ beschreibt eine Position, die weiter von der Körperoberfläche entfernt liegt. Das Gehirn befindet sich tief im Schädel. 

 Zusätzlich bieten ein paar selten verwendete Begriffe wie „ipsilateral“ und „contralateral“ Beschreibungen der Struktur in Bezug auf eine andere Körperstruktur, die sich auf derselben oder verschiedenen Seiten des Körpers befindet. Zum Beispiel sind die Position des Colon ascendens und der Gallenblase ipsilateral; jedoch ist das Colon ascendens und das Colon descendens contralateral.

Anatomical direction and body position terms help describe where one body structure is located in relation to another. These terms use comparisons, such as one tissue being inferior to another or a tumor being superficial to a deeper structure. They are based on the standard anatomical reference position, which uses the body in an upright pose.

Anterior and posterior are a common pair of directional terms. Anterior, also called ventral, means toward the front of the body. Posterior, also called dorsal, means toward the back of the body. For example, the toes are anterior to the foot, and the popliteus is posterior to the patella.

Another pair is superior and inferior. Superior means above or higher than another body part. Inferior means below or lower than another body part, toward the feet or tail region. The orbits are superior to the orbicularis oris, and the pelvis is inferior to the abdomen.

Medial and lateral describe location relative to the body’s midline. Lateral means toward the side of the body, while medial means toward the middle. The thumb, or pollex, is lateral to the digits. The hallux is the medial toe. The term intermediate is also used for a structure that lies between two others, such as the transverse colon between the ascending and descending colon. The collarbone is intermediate between the shoulder and the breastbone.

Proximal and distal are used mainly for limbs. Proximal means nearer to the body’s trunk, and distal means farther from the trunk. The brachium is proximal to the antebrachium, and the crus is distal to the femur. Superficial means closer to the surface of the body, so the skin is superficial to the bones. Deep means farther from the surface, and the brain is deep in the skull. Some terms are used less often, such as ipsilateral, which means on the same side, and contralateral, which means on opposite sides. The ascending colon and the gall bladder are ipsilateral, while the ascending and descending colon are contralateral.
