Anatomische Bewegungen beschreiben die Bewegung von Knochen und Muskeln in Bezug auf die anatomische Standardposition. Diese Bewegungen paaren sich oft mit einer komplementären Bewegung in die entgegengesetzte Richtung.  
Viele Bewegungen verlaufen entlang der frontalen, sagittalen oder transversalen anatomischen Ebene.
Bewegungen in der Frontebene treten in Richtung oder weg von der Mittellinie des Körpers auf, z. B. das Anheben der Arme auf Schulterhöhe seitlich und das Zurückbringen der Arme zur Seite des Körpers.
Die Bewegungen in der sagittalen Ebene bewegen sich zwischen der vorderen und hinteren Seite einer Person, z. B. wenn der Arm beim Gehen nach vorne und hinten bewegt wird.
Zu den Bewegungen in der Querebene gehören Drehen und Drehen, wie z. B. das Drehen des Kopfes von einer Seite zur anderen.

Diese Bewegungen werden mit spezifischen Begriffen beschrieben, um eine standardisierte Art der Diskussion und des Verständnisses des Bewegungsumfangs an verschiedenen Gelenken zu bieten. Hier sind einige gängige anatomische Bewegungen: Die Beugungs- und Streckbewegungen erfolgen in der sagittalen (anterior-posterioren) Bewegungsebene. Diese Bewegungen finden an der Schulter, Hüfte, Ellenbogen, Knie, Handgelenk, Metacarpophalangeal-, Metatarsophalangeal- und Interphalangealgelenke statt. Die vordere Biegung des Kopfes oder der Wirbelsäule ist Beugung, während jede posterior-gerichtete Bewegung die Streckung ist. Es handelt sich um das Geradeausstellen oder Vergrößern des Winkels zwischen zwei Körperteilen. Zum Beispiel sind das Geradeausstellen des Ellenbogens oder das Strecken des Beins Beispiele für Streckung. Abduktion und Adduktion sind Bewegungen der Gliedmaßen, Hand, Finger oder Zehen in der koronaren (medial-lateralen) Bewegungsebene. Das seitliche Bewegen der Gliedmaße oder Hand vom Körper weg oder das Spreizen der Finger oder Zehen ist Abduktion. Adduktion bringt die Gliedmaße oder Hand zur Mitte des Körpers oder über die Körpermitte hinaus oder bringt die Finger oder Zehen zusammen. Zirkumduktion ist die Bewegung der Gliedmaßen, Hand oder Finger in einem kreisförmigen Muster unter Verwendung der sequentiellen Kombination von Beugungs-, Adduktions-, Streckungs- und Abduktionsbewegungen. Adduktion/Abduktion und Zirkumduktion finden an der Schulter, Hüfte, Handgelenk, Metacarpophalangeal- und Metatarsophalangealgelenken statt. Die Rotation von Nacken und Körper entlang der transversalen Ebene sind Drehbewegungen, die durch viele kleine Rotationsbewegungen benachbarter Wirbel verursacht werden. Den Kopf von einer Seite zur anderen drehen oder den Körper verdrehen ist eine Rotation. Die mediale und laterale Rotation der oberen Gliedmaße an der Schulter oder der unteren Gliedmaße an der Hüfte beinhaltet das Drehen der vorderen Oberfläche der Gliedmaße zur Körpermitte hin (mediale oder innere Rotation) oder von der Körpermitte weg (laterale oder äußere Rotation).

Body joint motion terms describe how bones and muscles move at different joints. These standard names make it easier to talk about range of motion in the body. They are used to describe actions at the shoulder, hip, elbow, knee, wrist, fingers, toes, and spine.

Flexion and extension are movements in the sagittal plane, also called the anterior-posterior plane. Flexion is the forward bending motion of the head or vertebral column. Extension is the backward movement or straightening of a joint, which increases the angle between two body parts. Examples include straightening the elbow or extending the leg.

Abduction and adduction happen in the coronal plane, also called the medial-lateral plane. Abduction moves a limb, hand, finger, or toe away from the body’s midline. It also includes spreading the fingers or toes. Adduction brings the limb, hand, fingers, or toes back toward the midline or together.

Circumduction is a circular movement of a limb, hand, or finger. It combines flexion, adduction, extension, and abduction in sequence. This motion can occur at the shoulder, hip, wrist, metacarpophalangeal joints, and metatarsophalangeal joints.

Rotation is a twisting movement in the transverse plane. Neck and body rotation come from many small rotational movements between nearby vertebrae. Turning the head from side to side is one example.

Medial and lateral rotation also occur at the shoulder and hip. In medial, or internal, rotation, the front of the limb turns toward the body’s midline. In lateral, or external, rotation, the front of the limb turns away from the midline.
