Für die Durchführung jedes Experiments ist es notwendig, die Chemie zwischen den Reagenzien zu verstehen. Zu diesem Zweck haben Wissenschaftler ein Werkzeug namens Leiterdiagramm entwickelt, bei dem es sich um eine grafische Darstellung handelt, die dabei hilft, die Chemie eines Systems zu veranschaulichen.

Ein Leiterdiagramm für Säure-Base-Gleichgewichte besteht aus einer vertikalen Achse, die den pH-Wert darstellt, und horizontalen Balken (Stufen auf der Leiter), mit deren Hilfe alle  pKa-Werte im System positioniert werden können. Im Gleichgewicht entspricht der pH-Wert des Systems einem der pKa-Werte, die das System in saurere und basischere Bereiche unterteilen. Bei pH-Werten, die höher oder niedriger als ein gegebener pKa -Wert sind, d. h. wenn sich das System nicht im Gleichgewicht befindet, entspricht die dominierende Spezies derjenigen, die in diesem Bereich des Diagramms angegeben ist.

Das Leiterdiagramm des Säure-Base-Gleichgewichtssystems von HF und F zeigt zum Beispiel eine horizontale Linie bei pH 3,17, dem pKa-Wert von HF. Bei pH-Werten über 3,17 überwiegt F-, während bei pH-Werten unter 3,17 die HF-Konzentration höher ist.

Das Leiterdiagramm dieses Systems kann auch verwendet werden, um den Einfluss des pH-Werts auf die Löslichkeit von CaF2 zu verstehen. Die Löslichkeit von CaF2 kann durch die Umwandlung von F- in HF erhöht werden. Im Gegensatz dazu nimmt seine Löslichkeit ab, wenn F- dominiert. Aus dem Leiterdiagramm geht hervor, dass bei pH-Werten über 3,17 F- dominiert, wodurch sich die Löslichkeit von CaF2 verringert.
