Die titrimetrische Analyse wird je nach Art der Reaktionen in vier Hauptkategorien eingeteilt.
Bei der Neutralisation oder Säure-Base-Titration reagiert ein Proton mit einem Hydroxidion zu einem Wassermolekül.
Bei der Acidimetrie wird ein basischer Analyt mit einer Standardlösung einer starken Säure titriert.
Im Gegensatz dazu beinhaltet die Alkalimetrie die Titration eines sauren Analyten mit einer Standardlösung einer starken Base.
Bei Redoxtitrationen ändert sich die Oxidationszahl des Titriermittels und des Analyten, wenn Elektronen vom Reduktions- auf das Oxidationsmittel übertragen werden. 
Bei komplexometrischen Titrationen reagiert der titrierende Ligand mit dem Metallionenanalyten und bildet einen Metall-Liganden-Komplex.
Schließlich reagieren bei Fällungstitrationen der Analyt und das Titriermittel zu einem Niederschlag.

Die titrimetrische Analyse in der Lösungschemie umfasst die Messung des Lösungsvolumens und wird oft als volumetrische Analyse bezeichnet. Die Standardlösung bekannter Konzentration in der Bürette wird als Titriermittel bezeichnet, während die Lösung unbekannter Konzentration im Kolben als Analyt oder Titrand bezeichnet wird. Titrimetrische Analysen können basierend auf den Reaktionen zwischen Titriermittel und Analyt in vier Typen eingeteilt werden.
Titrationen zwischen einer Säure und einer Base führen zu Neutralisationsreaktionen, bei denen Wassermoleküle entstehen. Dies wird als Säure-Base-Titration bezeichnet. Beispielsweise entsteht bei der Titration einer Natronlauge-Standardlösung mit dem Analyten Salzsäure Wasser, zurück bleiben die säureneutralen Natrium- und Chloridionen. Bei der zweiten Art der titrimetrischen Analyse – der komplexometrischen Titration – verbinden sich Metallionen wie Silber und Quecksilber mit Elektronendonoren wie Cyanid und Chlorid zu Komplexen. Der dritte Typ ist die Fällungstitration, bei der das Titriermittel mit dem Analyten reagiert und ein unlösliches Produkt bildet. Beispielsweise führt die Titration zwischen Chloridionen und Silbernitratlösung zum unlöslichen Silberchlorid. Bei der letzten Art der titrimetrischen Analyse werden Redoxreaktionen verwendet, um die Menge oder Konzentration eines Analyten zu bestimmen. In diesem Fall ändern sich die Oxidationsstufen des Titriermittels und des Analyten aufgrund der Elektronenübertragung zwischen den beiden. Die Standardlösung kann ein Oxidations- oder Reduktionsmittel sein und der Endpunkt kann durch Indikatoren oder Änderungen der elektrischen Signale erkannt werden.

Titrimetric analysis measures solution volume and is also called volumetric analysis. A standard solution with a known concentration is placed in the burette and is called the titrant. The solution with an unknown concentration in the flask is the analyte, or titrand.

Titrimetric analysis is grouped into four types based on the reaction between the titrant and the analyte. Acid-base titrations involve a neutralization reaction between an acid and a base. This reaction forms water molecules. For example, sodium hydroxide standard solution can be titrated with hydrochloric acid. The reaction produces water and leaves the sodium and chloride ions neutral.

Complexometric titrations are the second type. In these titrations, metal ions such as silver and mercury combine with electron donors such as cyanide and chloride to form complexes. Precipitation titrations are the third type. Here, the titrant reacts with the analyte to form an insoluble product. A chloride ion titrated with silver nitrate, for example, forms insoluble silver chloride.

Redox titrations are the fourth type of titrimetric analysis. They use oxidation-reduction reactions to find the amount or concentration of an analyte. During the reaction, electrons move between the titrant and the analyte, and their oxidation states change. The standard solution may act as an oxidizing agent or a reducing agent. The end point can be detected with indicators or by changes in electrical signals.
