Metallionen werden in Metalle der Klassen A und B eingeteilt.
Metalle der Klasse A wie Alkali, Erdalkali und Metalle der ersten Übergangsreihe bilden stabile Komplexe mit Liganden, die Stickstoff, Sauerstoff oder Fluor als Donoratome gegenüber anderen aufweisen.
Während Klasse B, wie Metalle aus der zweiten und dritten Übergangsreihe, stabile Komplexe mit Liganden bilden, die Schwefel oder Chlor als Donoratome enthalten.
Voluminöse Liganden schwächen die Metall-Liganden-Bindung aufgrund sterischer Behinderung und destabilisieren den Komplex.
Alternativ bilden chelatbildende Liganden mit dem Metallzentrum fünf- oder sechsgliedrige Ringe und bilden stabilere Komplexe.
Darüber hinaus bilden zyklische Liganden mit drei oder mehr Donorstellen aufgrund des makrozyklischen Effekts hochstabile Komplexe.

Bei Komplexierungsreaktionen sind die Metallkationen die Elektronenpaarakzeptoren und die Liganden die Elektronenpaardonoren. Die Stabilität der Metallkomplexe hängt in erster Linie von der Komplexierungsfähigkeit des zentralen Metallions und der Art der Liganden ab. Im Allgemeinen hängt die Komplexierungsfähigkeit des Metallions von der Größe und Ladung des Ions ab. Mit zunehmender Größe des Metallions nimmt die Stabilität der Metallkomplexe ab, sofern die Wertigkeit des Metallions und der Liganden gleich bleibt. Andererseits nimmt mit zunehmender Ladung des Metallions die Stabilität der Komplexe zu.

Metallionen werden auf der Grundlage ihrer bevorzugten Liganden in die Klassen A und B eingeteilt, und zwar in Liganden, die als weiche oder harte Säuren und Basen beschrieben werden. Weiche Basen haben leicht oxidierbare Donoratome mit hoher Polarisierbarkeit und niedriger Elektronegativität, während harte Basen Donoratome mit geringer Polarisierbarkeit und hoher Elektronegativität haben. Kleinere, stärker geladene Metallionen mit ungesättigten äußeren Orbitalen werden als Klasse A eingestuft und binden sich bevorzugt an harte Basen. Im Gegensatz dazu werden größere, weniger geladene oder ungeladene Metallionen mit gefüllten äußeren Orbitalen als Klasse B eingestuft und bevorzugen die Komplexbildung mit weichen Basen. Was die Auswirkungen der Liganden auf die Stabilität der Komplexe angeht, so bilden kleinere, stärker geladene Liganden tendenziell stabilere Komplexe, während größere Liganden aufgrund der sterischen Abstoßung eher weniger stabile Komplexe bilden. Liganden mit unbesetzten p- oder d-Orbitalen können mit bestimmten Metallionen pi-Bindungen eingehen, die ihrerseits eine Rückbindung zum Liganden aufweisen, was beides zur weiteren Stabilisierung des Komplexes beiträgt.

Complex ions form when a metal cation accepts electron pairs from ligands, which are the electron pair donors. The stability of these metal complexes depends mainly on the metal ion and on the ligands attached to it.

The metal ion’s size and charge play a major role in stability. As the size of the metal ion increases, complex stability usually decreases when the valency of the metal ion and the ligands stays the same. As the charge on the metal ion increases, complex stability increases.

Metal ions are also grouped into Class A and Class B based on the ligands they prefer. This preference is described using the idea of hard and soft acids and bases. Soft bases have donor atoms that are easily oxidized, highly polarizable, and low in electronegativity. Hard bases have donor atoms with low polarizability and high electronegativity.

Smaller, more highly charged metal ions with unsaturated outer orbitals are Class A ions. They usually bind to hard bases. In contrast, larger metal ions with lower charge or no charge and filled outer orbitals are Class B ions, and they tend to complex with soft bases.

Ligands also affect stability through their size and bonding ability. Smaller ligands with a higher charge usually form more stable complexes. Larger ligands can form less stable complexes because steric repulsion, or crowding, makes binding less favorable.

Some ligands with vacant p or d orbitals can form pi bonds with certain metal ions. These ligands can also take part in back bonding. Both effects help stabilize the complex further.
