Hormone sind chemische Botenstoffe, die Signalkaskaden auslösen.
Fettlösliche Hormone, wie Steroide oder Schilddrüsenhormone, haben intrazelluläre Rezeptoren im Zytoplasma oder Zellkern ihrer Zielzellen.
Die Bindung von Hormonen an ihre intrazellulären Rezeptoren kann zu Veränderungen im Zellstoffwechsel und zur Zellproliferation führen.     
Testosteron ist ein Steroidhormon, das schnell über die Zellmembran in die extrazelluläre Flüssigkeit diffundieren kann.
Es bindet sich an Transportproteine außerhalb der Zelle, um im Blutkreislauf löslich zu bleiben.
Bei Erreichen der Zielzelle löst sich Testosteron vom Transportprotein. Es diffundiert durch die Membran und bindet an einen Androgenrezeptor im Inneren der Zelle.
Dieser Hormon-Rezeptor-Komplex kann in den Zellkern eindringen und an eine bestimmte DNA-Sequenz binden, die als Hormonreaktionselement bezeichnet wird. Diese Bindung reguliert die Genexpression und löst die mRNA-Transkription und die Proteintranslation aus.

Dieser Hormon-Rezeptor-Komplex dringt in den Zellkern ein und reguliert die Genexpression durch Bindung an spezifische DNA-Sequenzen, die als Hormonreaktionselemente bezeichnet werden. Dieser Prozess beeinflusst die mRNA-Transkription und die anschließende Proteintranslation und verändert den Zellstoffwechsel und die Zellproliferation.

Umgekehrt folgen wasserlösliche Hormone wie Peptide und Amine einem extrazellulären Mechanismus. Diese Hormone binden an Rezeptoren auf der Zelloberfläche und lösen eine Kaskade von Ereignissen aus. Die Bindung löst intrazelluläre Signalwege aus, an denen häufig Second Messenger wie zyklisches AMP beteiligt sind. Diese Kaskade führt zu zellulären Reaktionen wie Enzymaktivierung, veränderter Membranpermeabilität oder Gentranskription. Bemerkenswert ist, dass der Signalweg verstärkt wird, sodass eine geringe Hormonkonzentration eine starke zelluläre Reaktion hervorrufen kann. Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass die unterschiedlichen Mechanismen der Hormonwirkung die Komplexität der zellulären Signalwege verdeutlichen und letztendlich die physiologischen Reaktionen prägen, die für die Aufrechterhaltung der Homöostase entscheidend sind.

Hormones control cell activity by binding to receptors and starting a signaling cascade. A signaling cascade is a chain of events that carries information within or between cells and ends with a specific response in the target cell. In the endocrine system, hormone action depends on whether the hormone is lipid-soluble or water-soluble.

Lipid-soluble hormones, such as steroid hormones, act inside the cell. Because they are lipid-based, they can pass through cell membranes. They then bind to receptors in the cytoplasm or nucleus. Testosterone is one example. It diffuses across the cell membrane into the extracellular fluid, travels in the bloodstream with transport proteins, and then dissociates before binding to an androgen receptor inside the target cell.

After binding, the hormone-receptor complex enters the nucleus and controls gene expression. It does this by attaching to specific DNA sequences called hormone response elements. This changes mRNA transcription and later protein translation. The result can affect cell metabolism and cell proliferation.

Water-soluble hormones, such as peptides and amines, work at the cell surface. They bind to receptors on the cell membrane and trigger an intracellular signaling pathway. In many cases, this pathway uses second messengers such as cyclic AMP. The cascade can lead to enzyme activation, changes in membrane permeability, or gene transcription.

This type of signaling also amplifies the message. A small amount of hormone can produce a strong cellular response. These different hormone pathways show how endocrine signals help maintain homeostasis.

Neurons conduct electrical impulses along their membranes and at synapses. Brain cells can detect and sometimes respond to these impulses. Neuroglial cells help to support neural function. The brain consists of three major parts: the cerebrum, cerebellum and brainstem. The cerebrum is divided into lobes and hemispheres. Functions of the cerebrum that may be explored include voluntary muscle control, memory, sensory perception, emotions and speech. The cerebellum is primarily responsible for balance and coordination. The brainstem, a part of the autonomic nervous system, includes structural divisions that perform basic life functions such as breathing and heart rate. The spinal cord is a continuation of the brainstem. The spinal cord is a bundle of nerve tracts that transmits nerve signals between the brain and the body through electrical impulses. Nerves are bundles of neurons that transmit impulses between the peripheral and central nervous systems. The study of nerves can include sciatic, cranial and spinal nerves. Supporting structures of the central nervous system include the meninges and cerebrospinal fluid which protect the central nervous system. Processes of the nervous system are action potential propagation, simple nerve pathways (reflex arc) and neurotransmitter function. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, the effects of drugs, mental illnesses, spinal injuries, concussions, meningitis and multiple sclerosis (MS). Investigations are used to understand and explain the nervous system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.
