The Parathyroid Glands

The thyroid gland&#39;s posterior surface contains two embedded pairs of parathyroid glands. They are separated from the thyroid gland by a dense capsule.
The parathyroid glands primarily have two cell populations, namely oxyphil and principal parathyroid cells.
The oxyphil cells appear in late puberty, but their functions currently are unknown.
The principal parathyroid cells produce the parathyroid hormone, PTH or parathormone.
These cells monitor the circulating calcium concentrations.
When the calcium levels drop, the cells secrete the PTH. This hormone affects osteoblast and osteoclast activity in the bones to mobilize calcium.
The increased blood calcium levels enhance reuptake at the kidney and calcitriol secretion, enhancing the PTH activity.

The two pairs of parathyroid glands embedded within the posterior surface of the thyroid gland are restricted by a dense capsule around them. These glands comprise two distinct cell populations&#8212;parathyroid oxyphil and parathyroid principal cells- pivotal in calcium homeostasis.
Oxyphil cells, whose functions remain elusive, emerge during late puberty, adding a layer of complexity to the parathyroid gland&#39;s intricacies. In contrast, principal parathyroid cells undertake a vital role by producing the parathyroid hormone (PTH), also known as the parathormone. These cells actively monitor circulating calcium concentrations, exhibiting a dynamic response when levels decline.
Upon detecting decreased calcium levels, principal parathyroid cells release PTH, instigating a cascade of events to mobilize calcium. PTH regulates osteoblast and osteoclast activity in the bones. It initiates the secretion of the receptor activator of a growth factor called the nuclear factor-kappa-B ligament (RANKL) by osteoblasts. RANKL, in turn, amplifies osteoclast number and activity, intensifying mineral turnover and calcium release through bone matrix erosion.
Simultaneously, the heightened blood calcium levels trigger increased kidney reuptake and stimulate calcitriol secretion, reinforcing PTH activity. This feedback loop ensures a finely tuned regulation of calcium levels within the body, exemplifying the parathyroid glands&#39; indispensable role in maintaining systemic mineral homeostasis.

The parathyroid glands help control calcium balance in the body. These two pairs of glands sit on the posterior surface of the thyroid gland and are enclosed by a dense capsule. They contain two main cell types: principal cells and oxyphil cells.

Principal parathyroid cells make parathyroid hormone, or PTH, also called parathormone. These cells sense when blood calcium levels fall. When calcium drops, they release PTH to start a response that helps restore calcium balance.

PTH acts on bones, kidneys, and hormone signaling linked to calcium release. In bone, it affects osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Osteoblasts release RANKL, or receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa-B ligand, which increases the number and activity of osteoclasts and raises mineral turnover. This helps calcium leave the bone matrix and enter the blood.

Higher blood calcium then supports increased kidney reuptake and stimulates calcitriol secretion, which strengthens PTH activity. Oxyphil cells are the other parathyroid cell type, but their function is still unclear. They appear during late puberty. Together, these features show how the parathyroid glands maintain systemic mineral homeostasis.

The central nervous system is composed of the brain and spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system includes the remaining nervous tissue. A neuron consists of dendrites, a cell body and an axon. Neurons conduct electrical impulses along their membranes and at synapses. Brain cells can detect and sometimes respond to these impulses. Neuroglial cells help to support neural function. The brain consists of three major parts: the cerebrum, cerebellum and brainstem. The cerebrum is divided into lobes and hemispheres. Functions of the cerebrum that may be explored include voluntary muscle control, memory, sensory perception, emotions and speech. The cerebellum is primarily responsible for balance and coordination. The brainstem, a part of the autonomic nervous system, includes structural divisions that perform basic life functions such as breathing and heart rate. The spinal cord is a continuation of the brainstem. The spinal cord is a bundle of nerve tracts that transmits nerve signals between the brain and the body through electrical impulses. Nerves are bundles of neurons that transmit impulses between the peripheral and central nervous systems. The study of nerves can include sciatic, cranial and spinal nerves. Supporting structures of the central nervous system include the meninges and cerebrospinal fluid which protect the central nervous system. Processes of the nervous system are action potential propagation, simple nerve pathways (reflex arc) and neurotransmitter function. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, the effects of drugs, mental illnesses, spinal injuries, concussions, meningitis and multiple sclerosis (MS). Investigations are used to understand and explain the nervous system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.
