Diabetes Mellitus: Overview and Type I Subtype

Diabetes mellitus is an endocrine disorder that impairs the body&#8217;s ability to produce or use insulin.
In healthy individuals, insulin binding triggers the expression of glucose transporters in cells, facilitating glucose uptake.
But, in the case of diabetes, this process gets impaired, resulting in glucose accumulation in the bloodstream, causing hyperglycemia.
Based on underlying causes, diabetes can be categorized into several subtypes, such as type I, type II, and gestational diabetes.
Type I diabetes commonly occurs in children and adolescents. It is an autoimmune disorder resulting from the destruction of insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas.
As a result, insulin levels become extremely low or absent.
If left untreated, diabetes can result in severe complications like heart disease, kidney malfunction, and nerve damage.
Type I diabetes treatment typically involves administering insulin via injections or insulin pumps and is called the insulin-dependent subtype.
While type I diabetes risk factors are not well-defined, having a family history significantly increases the risk.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. As a result, the body is unable to produce sufficient insulin, and individuals with type 1 diabetes require lifelong insulin replacement therapy.
On the other hand, type 2 diabetes is primarily caused by insulin resistance, a condition in which the body&#39;s cells become less responsive to insulin. As a result, the reduced ability of insulin to facilitate glucose uptake leads to elevated blood glucose levels. Type 2 diabetes is often associated with lifestyle factors such as obesity, physical inactivity, and poor dietary choices. It is a progressive condition that may initially be managed with lifestyle modifications and oral medications, but some individuals may eventually require insulin therapy.
Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to a range of complications affecting various organs and systems in the body. These complications include cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, nerve damage or neuropathy, retinopathy, and impaired wound healing. It is important to manage blood glucose levels through medication, dietary changes, regular physical activity, and regular monitoring to prevent or delay the onset of complications.
Diabetes treatment aims to maintain blood glucose levels within the prescribed range. Lifestyle modifications like a healthy diet, monitoring blood glucose levels, and exercise help effective diabetes management. Additionally, oral medications to improve insulin sensitivity or stimulate insulin production and insulin injections or pumps for individuals with type 1 or advanced type 2 diabetes are prescribed.

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder that raises blood glucose levels. It happens when the body does not make enough insulin, when cells do not respond well to insulin, or when both problems are present. This condition can affect health and quality of life in many people worldwide.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease. In this form, the immune system attacks and destroys the beta cells in the pancreas that produce insulin. Because of this damage, the body cannot make enough insulin, so people with type 1 diabetes need lifelong insulin replacement therapy.

Type 2 diabetes is mainly caused by insulin resistance. Insulin resistance means the body’s cells become less responsive to insulin, so glucose does not move into cells as well as it should. High blood glucose often develops over time. Type 2 diabetes is often linked with obesity, physical inactivity, and poor dietary choices.

Treatment focuses on keeping blood glucose within the prescribed range. People may manage diabetes with a healthy diet, regular exercise, and blood glucose monitoring. Oral medications can help improve insulin sensitivity or stimulate insulin production. Some people with type 1 diabetes or advanced type 2 diabetes also need insulin injections or insulin pumps.

If diabetes is not controlled, it can damage many parts of the body. Complications can include cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, nerve damage, retinopathy, and poor wound healing. Regular management helps prevent or delay these problems.

The central nervous system is composed of the brain and spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system includes the remaining nervous tissue. A neuron consists of dendrites, a cell body and an axon. Neurons conduct electrical impulses along their membranes and at synapses. Brain cells can detect and sometimes respond to these impulses. Neuroglial cells help to support neural function. The brain consists of three major parts: the cerebrum, cerebellum and brainstem. The cerebrum is divided into lobes and hemispheres. Functions of the cerebrum that may be explored include voluntary muscle control, memory, sensory perception, emotions and speech. The cerebellum is primarily responsible for balance and coordination. The brainstem, a part of the autonomic nervous system, includes structural divisions that perform basic life functions such as breathing and heart rate. The spinal cord is a continuation of the brainstem. The spinal cord is a bundle of nerve tracts that transmits nerve signals between the brain and the body through electrical impulses. Nerves are bundles of neurons that transmit impulses between the peripheral and central nervous systems. The study of nerves can include sciatic, cranial and spinal nerves. Supporting structures of the central nervous system include the meninges and cerebrospinal fluid which protect the central nervous system. Processes of the nervous system are action potential propagation, simple nerve pathways (reflex arc) and neurotransmitter function. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, the effects of drugs, mental illnesses, spinal injuries, concussions, meningitis and multiple sclerosis (MS). Investigations are used to understand and explain the nervous system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.
