The Parathyroid Glands

Die hintere Oberfläche der Schilddrüse enthält zwei eingebettete Paare von Nebenschilddrüsen. Sie sind durch eine dichte Kapsel von der Schilddrüse getrennt.
Die Nebenschilddrüsen bestehen hauptsächlich aus zwei Zellpopulationen, nämlich den Oxyphil- und den Hauptnebenschilddrüsenzellen.
Die Oxyphilzellen treten in der späten Pubertät auf, ihre Funktionen sind jedoch derzeit unbekannt.
Die wichtigsten Nebenschilddrüsenzellen produzieren das Nebenschilddrüsenhormon PTH oder Parathormon.
Diese Zellen überwachen die zirkulierenden Kalziumkonzentrationen.
Wenn der Kalziumspiegel sinkt, sezernieren die Zellen das PTH. Dieses Hormon beeinflusst die Aktivität von Osteoblasten und Osteoklasten in den Knochen, um Kalzium zu mobilisieren.
Der erhöhte Kalziumspiegel im Blut verbessert die Wiederaufnahme an der Niere und die Calcitriolsekretion, wodurch die PTH-Aktivität gesteigert wird.

Die beiden Nebenschilddrüsenpaare, die in der hinteren Oberfläche der Schilddrüse eingebettet sind, werden durch eine dichte Kapsel um sie herum begrenzt. Diese Drüsen bestehen aus zwei unterschiedlichen Zellpopulationen – Nebenschilddrüsen-Oxyphilen und Nebenschilddrüsen-Hauptzellen –, die für die Kalziumhomöostase von entscheidender Bedeutung sind.

Oxyphile Zellen, deren Funktionen noch unklar sind, entstehen in der späten Pubertät und verleihen den Feinheiten der Nebenschilddrüse eine zusätzliche Komplexität. Im Gegensatz dazu spielen die Hauptzellen der Nebenschilddrüse eine wichtige Rolle bei der Produktion des Parathormons (PTH), auch Parathormon genannt. Diese Zellen überwachen aktiv die zirkulierenden Kalziumkonzentrationen und reagieren dynamisch, wenn die Werte sinken.

Bei der Feststellung eines verringerten Kalziumspiegels setzen die Hauptzellen der Nebenschilddrüse PTH frei, was eine Kaskade von Ereignissen zur Mobilisierung von Kalzium auslöst. PTH reguliert die Osteoblasten- und Osteoklastenaktivität in den Knochen. Es initiiert die Sekretion des Rezeptoraktivators eines Wachstumsfaktors namens Nuclear Factor-Kappa-B-Ligament (RANKL) durch Osteoblasten. RANKL wiederum steigert die Anzahl und Aktivität der Osteoklasten und intensiviert den Mineralumsatz und die Kalziumfreisetzung durch Knochenmatrixerosion.

Gleichzeitig löst der erhöhte Kalziumspiegel im Blut eine erhöhte Nierenwiederaufnahme aus und stimuliert die Calcitriol-Sekretion, wodurch die PTH-Aktivität verstärkt wird. Diese Rückkopplungsschleife gewährleistet eine fein abgestimmte Regulierung des Kalziumspiegels im Körper und veranschaulicht die unverzichtbare Rolle der Nebenschilddrüsen bei der Aufrechterhaltung der systemischen Mineralstoffhomöostase.

parathyroid hormone and calcium control

The parathyroid glands help control calcium balance in the body. These two pairs of glands sit on the posterior surface of the thyroid gland and are enclosed by a dense capsule. They contain two main cell types: principal cells and oxyphil cells.

Principal parathyroid cells make parathyroid hormone, or PTH, also called parathormone. These cells sense when blood calcium levels fall. When calcium drops, they release PTH to start a response that helps restore calcium balance.

PTH acts on bones, kidneys, and hormone signaling linked to calcium release. In bone, it affects osteoblasts and osteoclasts. Osteoblasts release RANKL, or receptor activator of nuclear factor-kappa-B ligand, which increases the number and activity of osteoclasts and raises mineral turnover. This helps calcium leave the bone matrix and enter the blood.

Higher blood calcium then supports increased kidney reuptake and stimulates calcitriol secretion, which strengthens PTH activity. Oxyphil cells are the other parathyroid cell type, but their function is still unclear. They appear during late puberty. Together, these features show how the parathyroid glands maintain systemic mineral homeostasis.

Neurons conduct electrical impulses along their membranes and at synapses. Brain cells can detect and sometimes respond to these impulses. Neuroglial cells help to support neural function. The brain consists of three major parts: the cerebrum, cerebellum and brainstem. The cerebrum is divided into lobes and hemispheres. Functions of the cerebrum that may be explored include voluntary muscle control, memory, sensory perception, emotions and speech. The cerebellum is primarily responsible for balance and coordination. The brainstem, a part of the autonomic nervous system, includes structural divisions that perform basic life functions such as breathing and heart rate. The spinal cord is a continuation of the brainstem. The spinal cord is a bundle of nerve tracts that transmits nerve signals between the brain and the body through electrical impulses. Nerves are bundles of neurons that transmit impulses between the peripheral and central nervous systems. The study of nerves can include sciatic, cranial and spinal nerves. Supporting structures of the central nervous system include the meninges and cerebrospinal fluid which protect the central nervous system. Processes of the nervous system are action potential propagation, simple nerve pathways (reflex arc) and neurotransmitter function. Homeostatic imbalances are explored. These include, but are not limited to, the effects of drugs, mental illnesses, spinal injuries, concussions, meningitis and multiple sclerosis (MS). Investigations are used to understand and explain the nervous system in a variety of inquiry and design scenarios that can incorporate evolutionary concepts, scientific reasoning, comparative analysis, communication skills and real-world applications.
