Das Überlagerungsprinzip findet Anwendung bei der Analyse von linearen Wechselstromschaltungen mit mehreren unabhängigen Quellen.
Stellen Sie sich eine Schaltung vor, die aus zwei Widerständen, einer Induktivität und zwei unabhängigen sinusförmigen Quellen mit unterschiedlichen Frequenzen besteht. Das Überlagerungstheorem kann verwendet werden, um den Spannungsabfall über den Widerstand zu bestimmen.
Nach dem Überlagerungssatz ist der Gesamtausgang einer linearen Schaltung mit mehreren Eingängen gleich der Summe der einzelnen Ausgänge jedes unabhängig voneinander arbeitenden Eingangs.
So kann die Schaltung in mehrere Schaltkreise mit jeweils einem einzigen sinusförmigen Eingang unterteilt werden. 
Da die Impedanz frequenzabhängig ist, gibt es für jede Frequenz unterschiedliche Frequenzbereichsschaltungen.
Die Spannungsteilungsregel und das Ohmsche Gesetz werden angewendet, um die Ausgangsspannung jedes Stromkreises zu bestimmen.
Die erhaltenen Spannungen werden dann im Zeitbereich ausgedrückt.
Die Gesamtausgangsspannung ist die Summe der Spannungen, die von jeder Quelle einzeln erzeugt werden.
Wenn dieser Spannungsabfall grafisch dargestellt wird, ergibt sich ein nicht sinusförmiger Ausgang, obwohl alle Eingänge sinusförmig sind.

Wenn alle Eingänge außer einem auf Null gesetzt sind, werden die übrigen Eingänge zu 0-V-Spannungsquellen und 0-A-Stromquellen. Da 0-V-Spannungsquellen einem Kurzschluss und 0-A-Stromquellen einem offenen Stromkreis entsprechen, werden die mit den anderen Eingängen verbundenen Quellen durch einen offenen Stromkreis oder einen Kurzschluss ersetzt. Übrig bleibt ein stationärer Schaltkreis mit einem einzigen sinusförmigen Eingang, der als Wechselstromkreis gilt und mithilfe von Zeigern und Impedanzen analysiert wird. Daher wird das Prinzip der Überlagerung verwendet, um einen Schaltkreis mit mehreren sinusförmigen Eingängen bei unterschiedlichen Frequenzen in mehrere separate Schaltkreise mit jeweils einem einzelnen sinusförmigen Eingang umzuwandeln. Jeder dieser Wechselstromkreise wird dann mithilfe von Zeigern und Impedanzen analysiert, um seinen sinusförmigen Ausgang zu bestimmen. Die Summe dieser sinusförmigen Ausgänge wird mit dem Ausgang der ursprünglichen Schaltung übereinstimmen.

Analyzing mixed-frequency linear circuits starts with the principle of superposition. In a linear circuit, the total output from several inputs is the sum of the outputs from each input acting alone. Here, the inputs are the voltages from independent voltage sources and the currents from independent current sources.

When one source is kept active, every other independent source is set to zero. A 0-V voltage source becomes a short circuit, and a 0-A current source becomes an open circuit. This leaves a steady-state circuit with only one sinusoidal input.

That single-input circuit can then be treated as an AC circuit. It is analyzed with phasors, which represent sinusoidal signals, and impedances, which describe how circuit parts oppose current in AC. The same process is repeated for each source in the original circuit.

The final result is found by adding the separate sinusoidal outputs together. This sum matches the output of the full circuit with multiple sinusoidal inputs at different frequencies. In this way, superposition turns one mixed-input circuit into several simpler AC circuits.
