Der Feuchtigkeitsgehalt des Zuschlagstoffs ist das überschüssige Wasser, das auf der Oberfläche des Zuschlagstoffs vorhanden ist und in einem gesättigten und oberflächentrockenen Zustand vorliegt.
Er wird mit einem Auftriebsmessertest gemessen.
Bei einem feuchten Zuschlagstoff ergibt die Summe aus Wasseraufnahme und Feuchtigkeitsgehalt den Gesamtwassergehalt.
Sie wird mit Hilfe eines Ofens im Labor oder von Elektrogeräten, die in Zuschlagstoffbehältern befestigt sind, bestimmt.
Wenn eine Halde Sand Regen und Sonne ausgesetzt ist, kann sie freie Feuchtigkeit auf der Oberfläche der Sandkörner im Inneren des Haufens zurückhalten.
Diese freie Feuchtigkeit drückt die angrenzenden Sandkörner auseinander und vergrößert das Volumen einer bestimmten Sandmasse, was als Sandblähung bezeichnet wird. 
Die Aufblähung von Sand trägt dazu bei, dass die Sandmasse ein bestimmtes Volumen einnimmt.
Beim Wiegen von Beton wird zusätzlicher Sand hinzugefügt, um die durch Feuchtigkeit verursachte Volumenzunahme auszugleichen, und die entsprechende Menge Wasser wird von der Mischung abgezogen, um die bereits im Sand vorhandene Feuchtigkeit zu berücksichtigen.

Feuchtigkeit beeinflusst auch das physikalische Volumen von Zuschlagstoffen, insbesondere Sand, durch einen Prozess namens Auflockerung. Dies geschieht, wenn Feuchtigkeit dazu führt, dass sich Sandpartikel gegenseitig abstoßen, wodurch das Gesamtvolumen zunimmt. Bei der Vorbereitung der Betonmischung hat das Auflockern keinen direkten Einfluss auf die Massenproportionierung; es hat jedoch Auswirkungen auf die Volumendosierung, wobei das erhöhte Volumen zu einer verringerten Masse pro Volumeneinheit in der Mischung führt.

Aggregate moisture affects concrete mixing by changing how much water must be added to the batch. Moisture content is the water coating the outside of aggregate that is in a saturated and surface-dry state. The total water in moist aggregate includes both moisture content and water absorption.

When aggregates sit in stockpiles or are exposed to rain, they can take in moisture. That extra water must be counted during concrete batching so the water-to-cement ratio stays correct. The moisture content of aggregate can be measured by the oven-drying method, which compares the water in the sample to its oven-dry mass.

Electrical moisture meters offer a faster option for checking aggregate water content. These devices detect changes in electrical resistance or capacitance caused by moisture. They can give instant or continuous readings, which makes them useful in automated concrete batching.

Moisture also changes the volume of sand through bulking. Bulking happens when water causes sand particles to repel each other and the sand takes up more space. Bulking does not change mass proportioning directly, but it can affect volume batching because the increased volume lowers the mass per unit volume in the mix.
