The porosity of aggregate refers to the volume of pores in the aggregate.
These pores vary in size and are either enclosed within the aggregate or interconnected and open to its surface, through which the water or other fluids can enter the aggregates.
A saturated surface-dry state implies that all aggregate pores are filled with moisture, yet the surface is dry.
Meanwhile, a moist state indicates the presence of excess moisture on the surface of the saturated aggregate.
When aggregate in a saturated surface-dry state is exposed to air, some moisture evaporates from the pores, resulting in an air-dry state.
When oven-dried, complete moisture evaporates from the aggregate pores, signifying a bone-dry state.
Water absorption is calculated as the difference in the mass of the aggregate between the saturated surface-dry state and the bone-dry state, expressed as a percentage of the sample&#39;s dry mass.
Lastly, water absorbed in the pores of aggregates in concrete will not be available to hydrate cement or improve concrete workability.
Moreover, when subjected to freeze-thaw cycles, this absorbed water may cause the aggregate to disintegrate.

Aggregates contain pores of varying sizes; while some are completely enclosed within the particles, others open onto the surface, allowing water to penetrate. The porosity of aggregates is a major factor contributing to the overall porosity of concrete, given that aggregates constitute about three-quarters of concrete&#39;s volume.
When all pores in an aggregate are filled with water, the aggregate is considered saturated and surface-dry. If left in dry air, water will evaporate until the aggregate reaches an air-dry state. Prolonged drying in an oven removes all moisture, leading to a bone-dry or oven-dry state.
Water absorption, a critical aggregate property, is measured by the weight loss of a saturated and surface-dry sample after being oven-dried for 24 hours and is expressed as a percentage decrease in mass relative to the dry mass of the aggregate. However, a more realistic duration for measuring water absorption in practical scenarios is 10 to 30 minutes rather than 24 hours. This adjustment acknowledges that in real construction settings, the actual absorption by aggregates in the mixer is less and is also influenced by the sequence of adding ingredients. Moreover, the absorbed water in the aggregate pores may not contribute to the hydration of cement and the workability of the concrete.

Aggregate contains pores of different sizes, and those pores may be sealed inside the particle or open to the surface. Open pores let water enter the aggregate. Because aggregate makes up about three-quarters of concrete by volume, its porosity strongly affects the porosity of the finished concrete.

Aggregate can also be described by its moisture state. When water fills every pore, the material is saturated and surface-dry. If it sits in dry air, some water evaporates and the aggregate becomes air-dry. After long drying in an oven, no moisture remains, and the sample is bone-dry, or oven-dry.

Water absorption is an important aggregate property. It is measured by finding the weight loss of a saturated, surface-dry sample after it has been oven-dried for 24 hours. The result is reported as a percentage decrease in mass compared with the dry mass of the aggregate.

In practice, a shorter absorption time of about 10 to 30 minutes is often more realistic. In a mixer, aggregates absorb less water than they do in a long drying test, and the result also depends on the order in which materials are added. Water held in aggregate pores may not help cement hydration or improve concrete workability.
