Testing Water Quality

If the quality of water available for preparing concrete is uncertain, its suitability is determined by comparing the setting time of cement and the compressive strength of mortar cubes made with the test water against those made with de-ionized or distilled water.
If the values obtained for setting time and compressive strength are within the permissible limits mentioned in the standards, the test water can be used to prepare concrete.
If brackish water is the only available option for mixing concrete, verifying that the concentration of chlorides, sulfates, and alkalis present in it are within the allowable limits prescribed in the standards is crucial in preserving concrete quality.
In case seawater is used for mixing concrete, the compressive strength of the concrete prepared with seawater and freshwater is tested, and the results are compared to ensure that the long-term stability is not reduced by more than 15 percent.
The possibility of water used for curing to cause staining on concrete surfaces can be determined by conducting performance tests that simulate wetting and evaporation on concrete surfaces.

American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) C1602 requires the setting times to be within 90 minutes of the control, British Standard (BS) 3146:1980 allows a 30-minute variance in the initial setting, while British Standards European Norm (BS EN) 1008 specifies initial setting time must be not less than 1 hour and final setting time less than 12 hours, within a 25 percent variability from the results with distilled water. Mortar cubes made with test water must achieve at least 90 percent of the compressive strength of those with distilled water.
Testing for impurities, such as chlorides, sulfates, total solids, alkalis, etc, is critical, as concentrations must not exceed established limits to ensure concrete quality. When seawater is utilized, the concrete&#39;s long-term compressive strength must not be over 15 percent lower than that of freshwater-prepared concrete. Moreover, performance tests simulating natural wetting and drying are employed to check for potential staining, a necessary step to verify the water&#39;s suitability for curing without compromising the concrete&#39;s appearance.

Water tests for concrete performance help determine whether an uncertain water source is safe to use in cement and mortar. The main checks compare the water against de-ionized or distilled water benchmarks. Engineers look at both setting time and the compressive strength of mortar made with the test water.

Standards set clear limits for these results. ASTM C1602 requires setting times to stay within 90 minutes of the control. BS 3146:1980 allows a 30-minute change in initial setting, while BS EN 1008 requires the initial setting time to be at least 1 hour and the final setting time to be less than 12 hours. BS EN 1008 also allows only a 25 percent variation from the results with distilled water.

Mortar cubes made with the test water must also be strong enough. They need to reach at least 90 percent of the compressive strength of cubes made with distilled water. The water is also checked for impurities such as chlorides, sulfates, total solids, and alkalis. These levels must stay below set limits to protect concrete quality.

Seawater can be used in some cases, but it needs extra checking. Its long-term compressive strength must not be more than 15 percent lower than concrete made with freshwater. Performance tests that copy natural wetting and drying are also used to look for staining. This step helps confirm that the water is suitable for curing without harming the concrete’s appearance.
