Natürlicher Sand kann organische Verunreinigungen enthalten, wie z. B. zerfallene vegetative Substanzen, die die Hydratation von Zement beeinträchtigen.
Ein kolorimetrischer Test wird durchgeführt, um das Vorhandensein von organischem Material nachzuweisen, das anhand der Farbe der zuschlagstoffhaltigen Lösung beurteilt werden kann. Je dunkler die Lösung, desto höher ist die organische Substanz darin.
Feine Verunreinigungen wie Ton, Schluff und Brecherstaub, die beim Zerkleinern von Steinen anfallen, überziehen die Zuschlagstoffe und führen zu einer schlechten Haftung mit dem Zementleim.
Darüber hinaus vergrößert das Vorhandensein von feinen Verunreinigungen die zu benetzende Oberfläche und benötigt daher mehr Wasser zum Mischen, Platzieren und Veredeln. Dieses überschüssige Wasser erhöht die Trocknung, das Schrumpfen und die Wahrscheinlichkeit von Rissen.
Das Nasssiebverfahren wird verwendet, um das Vorhandensein von feinen Verunreinigungen in groben Gesteinskörnungen zu bestimmen. 
Überschüssiges Salz in feinen Gesteinskörnungen führt zur Korrosion der Stahlbewehrungen und nimmt Feuchtigkeit aus der Luft auf, wodurch es zu Ausblühungen im Beton kommt.
Das Vorhandensein von Materialien mit geringer Dichte wie Schiefer und weichen Einschlüssen in Zuschlagstoffen wie Tonklumpen, Kohle oder Holz kann unter Belastung zerfallen, was zu Lochfraß und Ausbrüchen im Beton führt.

Schädliche Stoffe in Zuschlagstoffen können sich nachteilig auf die Qualität und Haltbarkeit von Beton auswirken. Zu diesen Stoffen gehören organische Verunreinigungen wie Lehm, die die Zementhydratation beeinträchtigen und normalerweise im Sand vorhanden sind. Sie verhindern eine gute Bindung zwischen Zuschlagstoff und Zementleim. Organische Verunreinigungen können mithilfe des kolorimetrischen Tests erkannt werden, bei dem die Färbung einer Lösung nach dem Rühren den Grad des organischen Gehalts angibt.


 Eine weitere Art von Verunreinigung sind Ton und Feinmaterial, die die Aggregatkörner umhüllen und die Bindung mit dem Zementleim schwächen können. Der Ton- und Schluffgehalt im Zuschlagstoff wird häufig mithilfe von Sedimentations- oder Nasssiebverfahren ermittelt. Salze aus Meeresumgebungen gelten ebenfalls als schädliche Substanzen, insbesondere wenn sie mehr als 6 % der Masse ausmachen, da sie zur Korrosion der im Beton eingebetteten Bewehrungen führen können. Um den Salzgehalt zu senken, wird empfohlen, die Zuschlagstoffe mit Süßwasser zu waschen.


 Schließlich können Zuschlagstoffe, die nicht haltbare oder wasserabsorbierende Partikel wie Schiefer, Kohle oder Glimmer enthalten, zu Betonschäden führen. Die American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) C 33-03 legt zulässige Werte für diese nicht haltbaren Partikel in Zuschlagstoffen fest. Ordnungsgemäße Tests und die Einhaltung von Normen sind entscheidend, um die Qualität der im Bauwesen verwendeten Zuschlagstoffe sicherzustellen und so die Integrität und Langlebigkeit von Betonstrukturen zu schützen.

The amount of clay and silt in aggregate is commonly measured by sedimentation or wet-sieve methods. Salts from marine environments are another concern, especially when they exceed 6% by mass. These salts can cause corrosion in steel reinforcement inside concrete, so washing aggregates with fresh water is recommended to lower the salt content.

Some aggregates contain unsound particles such as shale, coal, or mica. These materials may be non-durable or absorb water and can lead to concrete damage over time. ASTM C 33-03 sets limits for these particles, so testing and following standards help protect the strength and service life of concrete structures.
