Der Setztest misst die Verarbeitbarkeit des Betons und verwendet eine 12 Zoll hohe kegelstumpfe Form, die sich von acht Zoll an der Basis auf vier Zoll an der Oberseite verengt und sicher an einer flachen Basis befestigt ist, bevor der Beton gefüllt wird.
Der Beton wird in drei Schichten in die feuchte Form gegeben, die jeweils 25 Mal mit einem Stahlstopfstab mit einem Durchmesser von fünf Achteln Zoll und einem abgerundeten Ende verdichtet werden. Zum Schluss wird die obere Fläche abgestrichen.
Nach dem Verfüllen wird der Kegel sanft angehoben und der Beton sackt zusammen. Diese Abnahme seiner Höhe, die als Sack bezeichnet wird, wird auf den nächsten Viertelzoll genau gemessen.
Ein gleichmäßiges Setzmaß wird als echtes Setzmaß bezeichnet, während Beton, der die Form hinunterrutscht, auf ein Scherabrutschen hinweist, das erneut getestet werden muss. Der anhaltende Einbruch der Scherung deutet darauf hin, dass es der Mischung an Kohäsion mangelt.
Manchmal kann der Beton bei mageren Mischungen zusammenbrechen, was die Unzuverlässigkeit des Setztests für magere Mischungen unterstreicht.
Ein zu hoher oder zu niedriger Einbruch, dient als sofortiger Alarm und veranlasst die Korrektur des Problems mit der Mischung beim Betonieren in großen Mengen. Empfohlene Einbruchswerte für unterschiedliche Verarbeitbarkeiten sind vorgegeben.

Der Setzversuch ist eine weit verbreitete Methode zur Messung der Verarbeitbarkeit von Beton. Dabei wird eine 30,48 Zentimeter hohe Kegelstumpfform verwendet, die sich von 20,32 Zentimetern an der Basis auf 10,16 Zentimeter an der Spitze verjüngt. Vor dem Test wird die Form sicher auf einer flachen Unterlage befestigt und angefeuchtet.


 Zur Durchführung des Tests wird Beton in drei Schichten in die Form gegossen. Jede Schicht wird 25 Mal mit einem Stahlstampfer verdichtet, der einen Durchmesser von 1,58 Zentimetern und ein abgerundetes Ende hat, um eine gleichmäßige Verteilung zu gewährleisten und Lufteinschlüsse zu vermeiden. Nach dem Verdichten wird die obere Oberfläche des Betons geebnet.


 Sobald die Form gefüllt ist, wird sie vorsichtig angehoben, sodass der Beton aufgrund der Schwerkraft nach unten sinkt. Die Abnahme der Betonhöhe, das sogenannte Setzmaß, wird dann auf 0,63 Zentimeter genau gemessen. Ein richtiges Setzmaß, bei dem der Beton seine konische Form beibehält, ist ein echtes Setzmaß. Wenn der Beton zusammenbricht oder sich ausbreitet, was auf ein Abrutschen hindeutet, muss der Test möglicherweise wiederholt werden, da dies darauf hindeutet, dass die Mischung nicht kohäsiv ist und für strukturelle Anwendungen problematisch sein könnte.


 Zu hohe oder zu niedrige Setzmaße sind ein Hinweis auf mögliche Probleme in der Betonmischung, die angepasst werden müssen. Der Setzversuch ist besonders effektiv, um den unmittelbaren Korrekturbedarf bei Massenbeton zu ermitteln, obwohl er bei mageren Mischungen, bei denen der Beton zum Einsturz neigt, weniger zuverlässig sein kann. Empfohlene Setzmaße werden auf Grundlage der spezifischen Anforderungen für verschiedene Arten der Verarbeitbarkeit vorab festgelegt.

Slump Test

The slump test checks the workability of fresh concrete. Workability means how easy the mix is to place and handle. The test uses a 12-inch-high truncated cone mold that narrows from eight inches at the base to four inches at the top.

Before testing, the mold is fixed to a flat base and dampened. Concrete is added in three layers. Each layer is compacted 25 times with a steel tamping rod that is five-eighths of an inch in diameter and has a rounded end. This helps spread the concrete evenly and remove air pockets. The top surface is then leveled off.

After the mold is full, it is lifted straight up. The concrete drops under gravity, and the drop in height is called the slump. The slump is measured to the nearest quarter inch. If the concrete keeps its cone shape, it is called a true slump.

If the concrete collapses or spreads out, it is a shear slump. That result can mean the mix lacks cohesion and may not work well for structural use. Very high or very low slump values also point to problems in the mix and may require adjustment. The slump test is especially useful for finding quick fixes in bulk concreting work, but it may be less reliable for lean mixes that tend to collapse. Recommended slump values are set ahead of time for the workability needed in each type of job.
