Die nichtinvasive Beatmung (NIV) bietet eine Beatmungsunterstützung, ohne dass ein künstlicher Atemweg eingeführt werden muss.
Diese Art der Beatmung wird bei Patienten mit Atemversagen eingesetzt, die bei Bewusstsein sind und selbstständig atmen können, aber Unterstützung benötigen, um den Gasaustausch zu verbessern.
Bei den beiden Arten der NIV handelt es sich um Unterdruckbeatmungsgeräte und nichtinvasive Überdruckbeatmung (NIPPV).
Ein Unterdruckbeatmungsgerät, das einem Kürass ähnelt, erzeugt ein Vakuum um die Brust oder den Körper, um Luft in die Lunge zu saugen und so die Atmung zu simulieren.
Es reduziert intermittierend den intrathorakalen Druck und strömt Luft in die oberen Atemwege, gefolgt von einer passiven Exspiration, wenn das Gerät ausgeschaltet wird.
