Psychodynamic therapy explores the unconscious mind, such as repressed memories, conflicts, and early childhood experiences, to understand current behaviors and psychological issues.
Freud's psychoanalytic approach is the foundation of this therapy and operates on specific techniques.
The free association encourages clients to speak openly without hesitation, revealing hidden thoughts. Resistance while talking, like avoiding certain topics, signals unconscious conflict.
Dream analysis is another technique that interprets the symbolic content of dreams to uncover hidden desires, such as unresolved fears or suppressed emotions related to past life events.
While using the interpretation technique, therapists identify symbolic meanings in words, behaviors, or dreams, helping clients link past experiences with current emotions and patterns.
Transference refers to a client relating to the therapist in ways that mirror important past relationships, such as treating the therapist like a parent or partner. It helps explore patterns in the client's relationships.
Lastly, by working through techniques, therapists help clients address conflicts and resistance, like changing habits of avoidance to adopt healthier communication strategies.
