Development of Head Control During Infancy

The control of head posture and movement plays a significant role in the early development of motor skills.

In the first four months of life, babies learn to control their head movements.

This early skill helps prepare them for later motor abilities such as grasping, sitting, and locomotion.

Head control builds gradually during the first few months of life.

At birth, infants can turn their heads from side to side while lying on their backs.

Some newborns can briefly lift their heads when placed on their stomachs during tummy time.

Between 2 and 3 months, babies start to raise their heads more steadily. Sometimes they lose balance and roll onto their backs.

Then, by 4 months, most infants can hold their heads upright while sitting with support.

Finally, by 5 to 6 months, babies usually have strong neck muscles that help them hold their heads up more firmly.
