Rheotactic Index

The rheotactic index is a quantitative measure of an organism’s directional response to moving fluid, indicating whether it preferentially swims or moves against, with, or across a current. It is commonly calculated from the relative numbers or proportions of individuals traveling upstream and downstream under defined flow conditions, with the resulting value reflecting the strength and direction of rheotaxis. In behavioral research, this index helps compare locomotor responses across flow velocities, environmental conditions, species, or experimental treatments. It can clarify how sensory systems, swimming performance, and habitat preferences influence movement in aquatic environments and support studies of animal navigation and ecological behavior.
