Bilateral Ovariectomy

Bilateral ovariectomy is the surgical removal of both ovaries, a procedure that eliminates the primary source of ovarian hormones and provides a controlled model of ovarian hormone depletion. By removing the ovaries, it sharply reduces circulating estrogen and progesterone, altering hormone-responsive biochemical pathways and physiological feedback through the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. In biochemistry and biomedical research, this model helps investigators examine hormone-dependent changes in metabolism, bone turnover, reproductive signaling, and gene expression, as well as evaluate hormone replacement strategies and other interventions. Findings can clarify how ovarian hormones regulate molecular processes and contribute to conditions associated with menopause or loss of ovarian function.
