Motor Protein Motility

Motor protein motility is the directed movement of molecular motors along cytoskeletal filaments, a process that organizes and transports materials within cells. Powered by ATP hydrolysis, motor proteins such as myosins, kinesins, and dyneins undergo conformational changes that produce stepping or sliding along actin filaments or microtubules, often carrying cargo or generating force. This motility supports intracellular transport, chromosome movement, muscle contraction, and cell division. Studying its biochemical basis reveals how chemical energy becomes mechanical work and helps researchers understand disorders caused by defects in molecular transport, force production, or cytoskeletal organization.

Microtubule Associated Motor Proteins

2023

Eukaryotic cells have different motor proteins for transporting various cargo within the cell. These motor proteins differ based on the filament they associate with, the direction they move within the cell, and the type of cargo they transport. Motor proteins that associate with microtubules are known as microtubule-associated motor proteins. There are two families of microtubule-associated motor proteins —Kinesins and Dyneins. Both these proteins assist in the transport of cellular cargos...

An Introduction to Cell Motility and Migration

2023

Cell motility and migration play important roles in both normal biology and in disease. On one hand, migration allows cells to generate complex tissues and organs during development, but on the other hand, the same mechanisms are used by tumor cells to move and spread in a process known as cancer metastasis. One of the primary cellular machineries that make cell movement possible is an intracellular network of myosin and actin molecules, together known as “actomyosin”, which creates a...

Recently available video recording and spatiotemporal mapping (STmap) techniques make it possible to visualize and quantify both propagating and mixing patterns of intestinal motility. The goal of this protocol is to explain the generation and analysis of STmaps using the GastroIntestinal Motility Monitoring (GIMM) system.
