Cell Membrane Models

Cell membrane models are simplified experimental or computational representations of biological membranes that reproduce key features of lipid bilayers, membrane proteins, and cell-like interfaces for controlled study. In bioengineering, researchers assemble systems such as liposomes, supported lipid bilayers, or engineered vesicles by organizing amphipathic lipids in aqueous conditions, then assess properties including fluidity, permeability, molecular diffusion, and protein interactions. These models isolate membrane behavior that is difficult to measure in living cells, enabling studies of transport, signaling, mechanics, and host-pathogen interactions. They also support the design of biosensors, drug-delivery carriers, synthetic cells, and biomimetic materials.

Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University The United States consumes a large amount of energy – the current rate is around 97.5 quadrillion BTUs annually. The vast majority (90%) of this energy comes from non-renewable fuel sources. This energy is used for electricity (39%), transportation (28%), industry (22%), and residential/commercial use (11%). As the world has a limited supply of these non-renewable sources, the United States (among others) is...
