Supramolecular Hydrogels

Supramolecular hydrogels are water-rich, three-dimensional polymer networks formed through reversible noncovalent interactions, offering a soft, adaptable platform for biomedical research and engineering. Their gel structure arises when molecules or polymers self-assemble through forces such as hydrogen bonding, host–guest recognition, π–π stacking, or electrostatic attraction, allowing materials to respond to changes in pH, temperature, ions, or biochemical signals. In bioengineering, these properties support injectable matrices, controlled drug delivery, cell encapsulation, and scaffolds for tissue regeneration. Because their dynamic bonds can enable self-healing and tunable mechanical behavior, supramolecular hydrogels help researchers model extracellular environments and design responsive biomaterials.

Supramolecular hydrogelators based on ureido-pyrimidinones allow full control over the macroscopic gel properties and the sol–gel switching behavior using pH. Here, we present a protocol for formulating and injecting such a supramolecular hydrogelator via a catheter delivery system for local delivery directly in relevant areas in the pig heart.

The goal of this experiment is to determine and control the size, shape and stability of self-assembled discotic amphiphiles in water. For aqueous based supramolecular polymers such level of control is very difficult. We apply a strategy using both repulsive and attractive interactions. The experimental techniques applied to characterize this system are broadly applicable.

Sparks, Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The University of Utah, Salt Lake City, UT Hydrogels are a versatile class of cross-linked polymers produced through relatively simple procedures and with generally inexpensive materials. They can be formed from solution and involve a polymer backbone formed from monomer reagents, an initiator which makes the polymer reactive and a crosslinking species which binds the polymer chains...
