Polysiloxane Lce

Polysiloxane liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) are flexible, crosslinked polymer materials that combine the elasticity of silicone-like polysiloxanes with the direction-dependent organization of liquid crystals. Their liquid-crystal mesogens align within a polymer network, and changes in molecular order can produce reversible contraction, expansion, or bending when the material is stimulated, commonly by heat or other external conditions. In bioengineering, these mechanically responsive materials support research on soft actuators, artificial muscle systems, adaptive biomedical devices, and biomimetic structures. Their tunable elasticity, anisotropic motion, and compatibility with microscale fabrication make them useful for developing responsive systems that interact with biological environments.

This study describes synthetic routes for aminopropyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxanes and polydimethyl-methyl-phenyl-siloxane-block copolymers and for soft polysiloxane-based urea (PSU) elastomers. It presents the application of PSUs as accommodating an intraocular lens. An evaluation method for in vitro cytotoxicity is also described.

Here, we fabricate 3D polymeric micro/nano structures in which both the shape and the molecular alignment can be engineered with nanometer scale accuracy by the use of direct laser writing. Light induced deformation of several types of liquid crystalline elastomer microstructures can be controlled in the microscopic scale.

We demonstrate the preparation of siloxane-based and epoxy-based liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) and LCE nanocomposites. The LCEs are characterized with respect to reversible strain, liquid crystal ordering, and stiffness. As a potential application, we demonstrate their use as shape-responsive substrates in a custom device for active cell culture.
