Bead Beading Device

A bead-beating device is laboratory equipment that uses hard beads and mechanical agitation to disrupt biological samples, making intracellular molecules accessible for analysis. During processing, the sample is mixed with glass, ceramic, or metal beads and shaken or homogenized rapidly; repeated collisions generate shear and impact forces that break cell walls, membranes, or tough tissues. The resulting lysate can support extraction of DNA, RNA, proteins, and other biomolecules from microorganisms, plant material, or animal tissues, particularly when chemical lysis alone is insufficient. Bead beating therefore improves sample preparation and can increase reproducibility in molecular biology, microbiology, and environmental biology workflows.

2011

Dielectrophoresis (DEP) is an effective method to manipulate cells. Printed circuit boards (PCB) can provide inexpensive, reusable and effective electrodes for contact-free cell manipulation within microfluidic devices. By combining PDMS-based microfluidic channels with coverslips on PCBs, we demonstrate bead and cell manipulation and separation within multichannel microfluidic devices.
