Bead Placement

Bead placement is a biological technique that positions small beads at defined locations in cells, tissues, embryos, or experimental devices to mark regions or deliver localized physical or chemical cues. Researchers typically select beads with suitable size and surface properties, then place them using fine tools such as a micropipette or needle; once positioned, the beads can remain localized and be visualized during subsequent experiments. This approach supports studies of tissue patterning, cell movement, morphogenesis, and spatial signaling by linking a bead’s location to observed biological responses. It can also improve experimental control when testing how localized materials or mechanical influences affect development and cellular behavior.

This video demonstrates two methods for preparing and placing beads, which have been coated with growth factor, on explants of the developing cerebral cortex. These beads can be used to induce spatially restricted gene expression on developing neural tissue such as forebrain explants. Methods are given for using both Affi-Gel beads and heparin acryllic beads.

Source: Sharon Bord, MD, Department of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA When monitoring patients, it is important to obtain values that are accurate and reliable. Blood pressure monitoring is one of the essential vital signs, and for a majority of patients, measuring it utilizing non-invasive techniques provides accurate values. However, there are situations in which the blood pressure requires more exact, specific, and reliable measurements.

Source: Julianna Jung, MD, FACEP, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA For unstable patients requiring urgent administration of medications, fluids, or blood products, establishing vascular access quickly is essential. However, there are many factors that can complicate placement of a peripheral intravenous cannula (PIV), and it is extremely common for PIV attempts to fail. PIV placement may be technically challenging in small...
