Biological Organization

Biological organization describes the hierarchical arrangement of living systems, from molecules and organelles to cells, tissues, organs, organisms, populations, communities, and ecosystems. Each level arises from interactions among components at the level below, while feedback, communication, and exchange of matter and energy help maintain structure and function. This framework enables biologists to connect molecular mechanisms with cellular activity, organismal physiology, and ecological patterns. Studying biological organization supports research in genetics, developmental biology, medicine, and environmental science by revealing how changes at one level can influence systems across multiple levels.

This video presents synthetic biology and its role in bioengineering. Synthetic biology refers to the methods used to genetically modify organisms in order to make them capable of producing large quantities of a product. This product could be a protein that the cell already makes or a new protein that has been encoded in a newly-inserted DNA sequence. Here, we discuss how an organism's genetic material is modified using transformation or transfection. Then, the process is shown in the...

What is Conservation Biology?

Conservation biology is a scientific field that focuses on the preservation of biodiversity in order to protect ecosystems while meeting the needs of the human population. Humans require properly functioning ecosystems to maintain our supply of natural resources, including food, medicines, and building materials. Ecosystems also perform critical services, such as purifying our air and water. A large body of evidence indicates that such ecosystem services depend on biodiversity. Furthermore,...

An Introduction to Molecular Developmental Biology

Molecular signals play a major role in the complex processes occurring during embryonic development. These signals regulate activities such as cell differentiation and migration, which contribute to the formation of specific cell types and structures. The use of molecular approaches allows researchers to investigate these physical and chemical mechanisms in detail. This video will review a brief history of the study of molecular events during development. Next, key questions asked by molecular...

An Introduction to Stem Cell Biology

2023

Cells that can differentiate into a variety of cell types, known as stem cells, are at the center of one of the most exciting fields of science today. Stem cell biologists are working to understand the basic mechanisms that regulate how these cells function. These researchers are also interested in harnessing the remarkable potential of stem cells to treat human diseases. Here, JoVE presents an introduction to the captivating world of stem cell biology. We begin with a timeline of landmark...

Mendelian Genetics Evolution is caused by changes in the genetic composition of populations. In the field of population genetics, scientists model this process as changes in the frequency of alleles at individual genetic loci. This simple representation of how evolution occurs dates to Gregor Mendel’s analysis of trait inheritance patterns in pea plants, first presented in 1865. Mendel determined, using rigorous collection of data, that noticeable traits are controlled by two alleles of each...
