Brdu Incorporation

BrdU incorporation is a method for detecting DNA synthesis and identifying cells that are actively progressing through the cell cycle, making it a useful indicator of cellular proliferation. During S phase, cells incorporate the thymidine analog 5-bromo-2′-deoxyuridine (BrdU) into newly synthesized DNA in place of thymidine; incorporated BrdU is then detected with specific antibodies using immunostaining, enzyme-linked assays, or flow cytometry. Researchers use this approach to quantify proliferating cells, determine cell-cycle activity, and assess changes in growth or replication in cultured cells and tissues. BrdU labeling supports studies of development, cancer biology, tissue regeneration, and responses to experimental treatments.

Environmental bacterioplankton are incubated with a model dissolved organic carbon (DOC) compound and a DNA labeling reagent, bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU). Afterward, DOC-degrading cells are separated from the bulk community based on their elevated BrdU incorporation using fluorescence activated cell sorting (FACS). These cells are then identified by subsequent molecular analyses.

A bioinspired scaffold is fabricated by a soft photolithography technique using mechanically robust and electrically conductive hydrogels. The micropatterned hydrogels provide directional cardiomyocyte cell alignment, resulting in a tailored direction of actuation. Flexible microelectrodes are also integrated into the scaffold to bring electrical controllability for a self-actuating cardiac tissue.
