Brine Shrimp Hatching

Brine shrimp hatching is the process by which dormant Artemia cysts resume development and release free-swimming nauplii, making it a useful example of animal development and adaptation in biology. When hydrated in saltwater with adequate oxygen, suitable temperature, and often light, the cyst resumes metabolism, the embryo grows, and the shell ruptures to release the larva. Hatching protocols help students investigate how environmental conditions affect development and survival. In research and aquaculture, newly hatched brine shrimp provide live feed for fish and invertebrate larvae, while their resilient cysts support studies of dormancy, stress tolerance, and life-cycle biology.

2026

This study presents a gelatin-based feeding method that enables precise, non-invasive, body mass–based oral drug delivery in adult zebrafish. The protocol demonstrates reliable feed acceptance and, as a proof-of-principle, successful delivery of MK-801, which resulted in the expected behavioral effects.

Zebrafish Maintenance and Husbandry

2023

The zebrafish (Danio rerio) is a powerful vertebrate model system for studying development, modeling disease, and screening for novel therapeutics. Due to their small size, large numbers of zebrafish can be housed in the laboratory at low cost. Although zebrafish are relatively easy to maintain, special consideration must be given to both diet and water quality to in order to optimize fish health and reproductive success. This video will provide an overview of zebrafish husbandry and...
