Cone Beam Computed Tomography

Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) is an X-ray imaging method that reconstructs three-dimensional views of internal structures from multiple projections, making it valuable for visualizing anatomy in biology and related health research. During a scan, a cone-shaped beam rotates around the specimen or subject while a detector records projection images; computational reconstruction combines these data into a volumetric image. CBCT is particularly useful for examining mineralized tissues such as bone and teeth, including their morphology, spatial relationships, and structural changes. Its three-dimensional datasets support anatomical assessment, specimen analysis, experimental imaging, and research linking structure with development, disease, or treatment outcomes.

Dual-phase cone-beam computed tomography (DP-CBCT) is a useful intraprocedural imaging technique for transarterial chemo-embolization treatment with drug-eluting beads of hepatocellular carcinoma. DP-CBCT has been used to perform three major steps in oncologic interventional radiology: tumor localization (see), navigation and intraprocedural catheter guidance (reach), and intraprocedural evaluation of treatment success (treat).

Diffuse fluorescence tomography offers a relatively low-cost and potentially high-throughout approach to preclinical in vivo tumor imaging. The methodology of optical data collection, calibration, and image reconstruction is presented for a computed tomography-guided non-contact time-domain system using fluorescent targeting of the tumor biomarker epidermal growth factor receptor in a mouse glioma model.
