Delayed Burst Release

Delayed burst release is a release profile in which a biological molecule, drug, or other payload remains largely retained for an initial period before being discharged rapidly. This behavior occurs when diffusion is temporarily restricted by a coating or matrix and later accelerates as the barrier swells, erodes, degrades, or responds to environmental conditions such as pH or enzymes. In biology and biomedical research, controlling delayed burst release can synchronize therapeutic delivery with disease processes, improve local treatment, and reduce premature exposure. Characterizing the delay and subsequent release rate helps researchers design delivery systems with predictable timing and assess their performance in laboratory and clinical applications.

Oral Drug Delivery Systems: Delayed-Release Systems

2026

Delayed-release drug delivery systems are specialized pharmaceutical formulations designed to postpone the release of active compounds until the drug reaches a specific region of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, typically the intestine. These systems are essential for drugs that may cause gastric irritation, are unstable in acidic environments, or need to exert therapeutic effects locally in the intestinal or colonic regions. The core feature of delayed-release systems is the use of enteric...

The Precision of Visual Working Memory with Delayed Estimation

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Human memory is limited. Throughout most of its history, experimental psychology has focused on investigating the discrete, quantitative limits of memory—how many individual pieces of information a person can remember. Recently, experimental psychologists have also become interested in more qualitative limits—how precisely is information stored? The concept of memory precision can be both intuitive and elusive at once. It is...

Measuring Delay Discounting in Humans Using an Adjusting Amount Task

Delay discounting refers to a decline in the value of a reward when it is delayed relative to when it is immediately available. We outline a computer-based delay discounting task that is easy to implement and allows for the quantification of the degree of delay discounting in human participants.

Continuous Theta Burst Stimulation to Reduce Responses to Ideological Threats

Source: Holbrook, C., et al. Continuous Theta Burst Stimulation of the Posterior Medial Frontal Cortex to Experimentally Reduce Ideological Threat Responses. J. Vis. Exp. (2018)This video demonstrates the application of continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) to modulate responses to ideological threats. Electromyography (EMG) electrodes record motor signals, while a magnetic coil stimulates the primary motor cortex to determine the active motor threshold (aMT). The coil is then repositioned...
