Cytoplasmic Viral Factory

A cytoplasmic viral factory is a virus-induced compartment in the host-cell cytoplasm where viral genomes are replicated, viral proteins are produced, and new virus particles begin to assemble. Viral infection reorganizes cellular membranes, proteins, and often cytoskeletal components to concentrate replication machinery and substrates within a specialized microenvironment, while helping protect viral intermediates from cellular defenses. Studying these factories in biology reveals how viruses remodel host cells and coordinate their replication cycles. Imaging, molecular genetics, and biochemical approaches can identify their components and organization, supporting research into host-pathogen interactions and the development of antiviral strategies that disrupt viral replication or factory formation.

2023

Source: Laboratories of Gary Lewandowski, Dave Strohmetz, and Natalie Ciarocco—Monmouth University A factorial design is a common type of experiment where there are two or more independent variables. This video demonstrates a 2 x 2 factorial design used to explore how self-awareness and self-esteem may influence the ability to decipher nonverbal signals. This video leads students through the basics of a factorial design including, the nature of a factorial design and what distinguishes it from...

Factorial Analysis is an experimental design that applies Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) statistical procedures to examine a change in a dependent variable due to more than one independent variable, also known as factors. Changes in worker productivity can be reasoned, for example, to be influenced by salary and other conditions, such as skill level. One way to test this hypothesis is by categorizing salary into three levels (low, moderate, and high) and skills sets into two levels (entry level...

Viral transcriptional factories are discrete structures that are enriched with cellular RNA polymerase II to increase viral gene transcription during reactivation. Here, a method to locate sites of actively transcribing viral chromatin in 3D nuclear space by a combination of immunofluorescence staining and in situ RNA hybridization is described.

The cytoplasm consists of organelles and a framework of protein scaffolds called the cytoskeleton suspended in an aqueous solution, the cytosol. The cytosol is a rich broth of water, ions, salts, and various organic molecules.Protein Folding and MisfoldingThe cytoplasm is the location for several cellular processes, including protein synthesis and folding. The aqueous nature of the cytosol promotes protein folding such that the hydrophobic amino acid side chains are buried in the protein core...
