Drosophila Larval Anatomy

Drosophila larval anatomy is the study of the body structure and organ systems of fruit fly larvae, a model widely used to investigate development, physiology, and genetics. The larva has a segmented body organized along anterior-posterior and dorsal-ventral axes, with structures such as the nervous system, gut, tracheal network, musculature, and imaginal discs developing through coordinated cell signaling and tissue growth. Anatomical analysis uses microscopy, dissection, genetic markers, and reporter lines to connect tissue structure with gene function. These approaches help researchers examine organ formation, cell differentiation, host-microbe interactions, and developmental disorders while providing concepts relevant to biology more broadly.

Drosophila Larval IHC

2023

Immunohistochemistry (IHC) is a technique used to visualize the presence and location of proteins within tissues. Drosophila larvae are particularly amenable to IHC because of the ease with which they can be processed for staining. Additionally, the larvae are transparent, meaning that some tissues can be visualized without the need for dissection. In IHC, proteins are ultimately detected with antibodies that specifically bind to “epitopes” within the protein of interest. In order to preserve...

This report describes a method for measuring Drosophila larval activity using the TriKinetics Drosophila Activity Monitor. The device employs infrared beams to detect movements of up to 16 individual animals. Data can be analyzed to represent motion parameters including rates and the positions of the animals within the assay chambers.
