Dry Blotting System

A dry blotting system is a laboratory device that transfers proteins or nucleic acids from an electrophoresis gel onto a membrane for detection and analysis. It uses a compact stack of gel, membrane, and conductive materials, with an applied electric field driving charged molecules out of the gel and onto the membrane while requiring little or no liquid transfer buffer. This method supports Western, Southern, and Northern blotting workflows, enabling researchers to identify target biomolecules through antibody binding or nucleic acid hybridization. Its simplified setup can reduce handling, transfer time, and buffer use in molecular biology experiments.

The Western Blot

2023

Western Blotting is used to identify the presence of specific proteins in electrophoretically separated samples. Following separation by a technique known as sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, or SDS-PAGE, western transfer is used to move proteins from a polyacrylamide gel onto a piece of membrane which traps the proteins in their respective locations. Next, the membranes are probed with antibodies in a process called immunboblotting. Immunoblotting uses...

Western blotting is an analytical technique for protein identification. It has various applications in immunology and medicine, including detecting diseases like bovine spongiform encephalopathy, mad cow disease, and human and feline immunodeficiency virus from biological samples. The technique begins with separating proteins from the sample using sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE), followed by protein transfer, immunoblotting, and finally, protein detection.

Dry Friction

2023

Dry friction occurs between two solid surfaces in contact as they attempt to move relative to one another. In daily life, dry friction is encountered in various forms, such as when walking on the ground, sliding an object across a table, or rubbing hands together. Despite its ubiquity, the underlying mechanisms behind dry friction are not readily visible. To illustrate this concept, imagine a wooden crate resting on a rough, non-uniform horizontal surface. When an external force is applied to...
