Ecm Protein Conjugation

ECM protein conjugation is the covalent attachment of extracellular matrix proteins, such as collagen, fibronectin, or laminin, to a surface, scaffold, or biomolecule to reproduce biologically relevant cell-binding cues. The process typically uses chemical crosslinkers or activated functional groups, including amines, carboxyls, and thiols, to form stable bonds while preserving regions that support cell adhesion and signaling. In biology and biomaterials research, ECM protein conjugation helps control cell attachment, spreading, migration, and differentiation on engineered substrates. It is therefore valuable for tissue engineering, organoid culture, regenerative medicine, and the development of more physiologically relevant in vitro models.

Conjugated Proteins

Simple proteins and protein complexes contain only amino acids. In contrast, many other proteins, called conjugated proteins, covalently bond with non-protein moieties. Nucleoproteins are protein complexes that contain nucleic acids, categorized as deoxyribonucleoproteins (DNPs) or ribonucleoproteins (RNPs) respectively. The nucleosome is a typical example of a DNP where nuclear DNA is associated with histone proteins. The major antigen for the Covid-19 virus SARS-CoV is an RNP that is critical...

A method to obtain nanofibers and complex nanostructures from single or multiple extracellular matrix proteins is described. This method uses protein-surface interactions to create free-standing protein-based materials with tunable composition and architecture for use in a variety of tissue engineering and biotechnology applications.

Collagens are the Major Structural Proteins of ECM

Three main types of fibers are secreted by fibroblasts: collagen fibers, elastic fibers, and reticular fibers. Collagen fiber is made from fibrous protein subunits linked together to form a long, straight fiber. Collagen fibers, while flexible, have great tensile strength, resist stretching, and give ligaments and tendons their characteristic resilience and strength. These fibers hold connective tissues together, even during the body's movement. Connective tissue proper includes loose...

(2022)This video demonstrates the use of quantum dot–conjugated spike protein (QD-Spike) to visualize dose-dependent viral entry in ACE2-GFP–expressing cells. Confocal imaging captures the internalization of QD-Spike via receptor-mediated endocytosis, modeling early coronavirus entry.
