Ex Vivo Analysis

Ex vivo analysis is the examination of cells, tissues, or organs after removal from an organism, providing a controlled way to study biological structure and function outside the body. Researchers maintain collected material under suitable laboratory conditions and measure responses to treatments, environmental changes, or experimental manipulation while preserving features of the original biological system. In biology, this approach supports studies of physiology, disease mechanisms, cellular communication, and tissue responses, while reducing the complexity of whole-animal experiments. Ex vivo findings can also guide drug evaluation, biomarker identification, and the design of follow-up in vivo studies.

Small ubiquitin-related modifier (SUMO) family proteins are conjugated to the lysine residues of target proteins to regulate various cellular processes. This paper describes a protocol for the detection of retinoblastoma (Rb) protein SUMOylation under endogenous and exogenous conditions in human cells.
