Fusion Peptide Delivery

Fusion peptide delivery is a biological strategy that uses engineered peptides to transport therapeutic or research molecules into cells, overcoming the limited membrane permeability of many cargoes. Typically, a fusion peptide combines a cell-penetrating or membrane-active sequence with a functional payload, enabling membrane association, cellular uptake, and, in some designs, endosomal escape through membrane disruption or pH-dependent changes. This approach can deliver proteins, nucleic acids, imaging agents, and other macromolecules for studies of intracellular pathways, gene regulation, and disease mechanisms. By avoiding some limitations of viral vectors and conventional formulations, fusion peptides support flexible delivery-system development, although stability, toxicity, targeting, and efficient release remain important design considerations.

Elastin-like polypeptides are stimulus-responsive biopolymers with applications ranging from recombinant protein purification to drug delivery. This protocol describes the purification and characterization of elastin-like polypeptides and their peptide or protein fusions from Escherichia coli using their lower critical solution temperature phase transition behavior as a simple alternative to chromatography.

Nuclear Fusion

2020

The process of converting very light nuclei into heavier nuclei is also accompanied by the conversion of mass into large amounts of energy, a process called fusion. The principal source of energy in the sun is a net fusion reaction in which four hydrogen nuclei fuse and ultimately produce one helium nucleus and two positrons. A helium nucleus has a mass that is 0.7% less than that of four hydrogen nuclei; this lost mass is converted into energy during the fusion. This reaction produces about...
