Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome

Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is a serious disorder in which destruction of red blood cells, low platelet levels, and acute kidney injury occur together. Most cases follow infection with Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli, whose toxins injure the endothelial cells lining small blood vessels, particularly in the kidneys, triggering platelet consumption and microangiopathic hemolytic anemia. In biology and medicine, HUS provides a model for studying host-pathogen interactions, vascular injury, and mechanisms of kidney failure. Recognizing its characteristic clinical and laboratory findings supports timely supportive care, including monitoring kidney function and managing fluid, electrolyte, and blood-related complications.

This manuscript provides a detailed two-step surgical procedure to perform mouse 5/6th partial nephrectomy (PNx) with pole ligation. Four weeks after surgery, in comparison with sham-operated mice, the PNx mice developed impaired renal function, anemia, cardiac hypertrophy, cardiac fibrosis, and decreased heart systolic and diastolic function.

An EEG experimental protocol is designed to clarify the interplay between conscious and non-conscious representations of emotional faces in patients with Asperger's syndrome. The technique suggests that patients with Asperger's syndrome have deficits in non-conscious representation of emotional faces, but have comparable performance in conscious representation with healthy controls.
