Hypoxia Incubator

A hypoxia incubator is a laboratory device that maintains cell or tissue cultures under oxygen concentrations below atmospheric levels, enabling controlled study of oxygen-dependent biology. It works by replacing or diluting ambient air with a regulated gas mixture, typically using nitrogen to reduce oxygen while controlling carbon dioxide, temperature, and humidity; sensors and feedback systems help maintain the selected conditions. In biology, hypoxia incubators model environments found in tumors, developing tissues, and ischemic injury, allowing researchers to examine cellular adaptation, metabolism, gene regulation, and responses mediated by hypoxia-inducible factors. These controlled conditions support disease modeling, drug testing, and cell-based research.

2017

We introduce a novel hypoxic chamber system for use with aquatic organisms such as frog and zebrafish embryos. Our system is simple, robust, cost-effective and allows the induction and sustainment of hypoxia in vivo and for up to 48 h. We present 2 reproducible methods to monitor the effectiveness of hypoxia.

This manuscript describes the development of an animal model that allows for the direct testing of the effects of tumor hypoxia on metastasis and the deciphering the mechanisms of its action. Although the experiments described here focus on Ewing sarcoma, a similar approach can be applied to other tumor types.
