In Utero Injection

In utero injection is a procedure that delivers substances directly to a developing fetus or its surrounding compartments before birth, enabling researchers to study and influence prenatal biology. Using a fine needle, often guided by imaging, investigators introduce cells, nucleic acids, drugs, or tracers into targets such as the amniotic cavity, placenta, or fetal tissues while maintaining controlled experimental conditions. In biology, the technique supports research on embryonic development, tissue formation, disease mechanisms, and prenatal gene or cell therapies. It can reveal how treatments act during critical developmental windows and help evaluate their safety and biological effects before birth.

2023

In utero electroporation is an important technique for studying the molecular mechanisms that guide the proliferation, differentiation, migration, and maturation of cells during neural development. Electroporation enables the rapid and targeted delivery of material into cells by utilizing electrical pulses to create transient pores in cell membranes. Although electroporation has traditionally been used in in vitro studies, scientific advancements have now broadened its utilization to intact...

Utero-tubal embryo transfer uses the utero-tubal junction as a barrier to prevent the embryo outflow that may occur when performing uterine transfer. Vasectomized males are required to obtain pseudopregnant recipients for embryo transfer. Both techniques are discussed.
