Micro Erosions

Micro erosions are microscopic areas of surface loss or tissue degradation that develop when physical, chemical, or biological forces remove material from a structure. In biological systems, repeated mechanical stress, friction, inflammation, or localized chemical activity can disrupt surface integrity, producing small defects that may enlarge or trigger repair responses under persistent conditions. Detecting micro erosions with microscopy, imaging, or surface analysis helps researchers characterize early tissue damage, monitor disease-related changes, and evaluate how cells and tissues respond to injury. Their study is especially relevant to understanding progression from subtle structural alterations to measurable functional impairment.

Streambank erosion potential can be evaluated and ranked using David Rosgen’s Bank Erosion Hazard Index (BEHI), however this protocol has significant limitations. Here we present protocol modifications to address time constraints, allow nonprofessionals to complete accurate assessments, and account for non-alluvial stream conditions in Northeast Ohio.

Measuring and Mapping Patterns of Soil Erosion and Deposition Related to Soil Carbonate Concentrations Under Agricultural Management

Spatial patterns of soil erosion and deposition can be inferred from differences in ground elevation mapped at appropriate time increments. Such changes in elevation are related to changes in near-surface soil carbonates. Repeatable methods for field and laboratory measurements of these quantities and data analysis methods are described here.

We used synchrotron X-ray tomography at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) to non-invasively produce 3D tomographic datasets with a pixel-resolution of 0.7µm. Using volume rendering software, this allows the reconstruction of internal structures in their natural state without the artefacts produced by histological sectioning.
