Mouse Brain Infection

Mouse brain infection is the invasion and multiplication of pathogenic microorganisms within mouse neural tissue, a biological process used to study how infections affect the central nervous system. Pathogens can enter through the bloodstream, peripheral nerves, or direct exposure, then interact with the blood-brain barrier, glial cells, neurons, and infiltrating immune cells to trigger neuroinflammation and tissue injury. Experimental models track pathogen distribution, immune responses, neurological changes, and disease progression under controlled conditions. These studies help clarify mechanisms of neuroinvasive disease, evaluate antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory treatments, and identify factors that influence recovery or long-term neurological damage.

Source: Zhang, S., et al. Intracranial Subarachnoidal Route of Infection for Investigating Roles of Streptococcus suis Biofilms in Meningitis in a Mouse Infection Model. J. Vis. Exp. (2018).This video demonstrates the detection of target gene expression in a bacteria-infected mouse brain. RNA is extracted, treated with a DNA-degrading enzyme, and reverse-transcribed into cDNA. The cDNA is amplified through thermal cycling with gene-specific primers, while a DNA-binding dye binds to the...

Influenza A viruses (IAVs) are important human respiratory pathogens. To understand the pathogenicity of IAVs and to perform preclinical testing of novel vaccine approaches, animal models mimicking human physiology are required. Here, we describe techniques to evaluate IAV pathogenesis, humoral responses and vaccine efficacy using a mouse model of infection.
