Mystery Fossil

A mystery fossil is a preserved biological specimen whose identity, evolutionary relationships, or significance remain uncertain. Researchers investigate it by documenting morphology, preserving contextual information such as its location and rock layer, and comparing anatomical features with known organisms; stratigraphic or radiometric dating can constrain its age, while phylogenetic analysis tests competing classifications. In biology and paleontology, these specimens may reveal unrecognized diversity, transitional characteristics, or gaps in the fossil record. Resolving their identity strengthens interpretations of evolutionary history and can guide further field collection, imaging, and laboratory analysis.

The Fossil Record

2026

The fossil record documents only a small fraction of all organisms that have ever inhabited Earth. Fossilization is a rare process, and most organisms never become fossils. The fossil record includes only fossils that have been discovered. As a result, it is biased toward long-lived, abundant, hard-bodied organisms preserved in sedimentary rock. Nevertheless, these fossils provide valuable information about an organism’s physical form, behavior, and age. Along with body fossils, trace...

2025

This article presents a suite of techniques for reconstructing fossil specimens using paper-resin composites. These composites are made by combining archival-grade paper with thermoplastic resins commonly used in fossil preparation laboratories. The resulting lightweight composites add long-term stability to specimens while retaining suitability for radiological analyses.

Forming an Evolutionary Hypothesis ExpandNOTE: A cladogram is an important tool for forming an evolutionary hypothesis. A cladogram is a tree-shaped chart used to depict the hypothetical genealogical relationships between species. The tips or leaves of the chart represent specific species and the branches of the tree are different lengths. The different lengths represent the degree of change between each of the species. The common ancestor of all of the species that a specific line branches...
