Parallel Synthesis

Parallel synthesis is a method for producing multiple distinct compounds or biological products in separate reaction vessels at the same time. It uses shared protocols, reagents, and controlled conditions while varying substrates or reaction parameters, allowing each product to form independently and enabling direct comparison of yields or activities. In biology, this approach supports the rapid generation of compound libraries, engineered biomolecules, or assay panels for studying structure-activity relationships, identifying candidate probes, and testing biological responses. By reducing sequential handling and standardizing experiments, parallel synthesis can improve throughput, reproducibility, and efficient experimental decision-making.

The Ugi reaction has proved to be a convenient way to quickly create diverse libraries of compounds. It involves the reaction of an amine, an aldehyde, a carboxylic acid and an isonitrile typically in methanol at room temperature. In this video, we utilize a 48-slot Mettler-Toledo MiniBlock equipped with filtration tubes and a Mettler-Toledo MiniMapper automated liquid handler was used to deliver the reagents and solvent. The parameters of interest were the concentration, the solvent...

Series and Parallel Resistors

Source: Yong P. Chen, PhD, Department of Physics & Astronomy, College of Science, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN This experiment demonstrates how current is distributed in resistors connected in series or parallel, and thus describes how to calculate the total "effective" resistance. Using Ohm's law, it possible to convert between the voltage and current through a resistance, if the resistance is known. For two resistors connected in series, (meaning that they are wired one after the...

The brain processes sensory information rapidly due to parallel processing, which involves sending data across multiple neural pathways at the same time. This method allows the brain to manage various sensory qualities, such as shapes, colors, movements, and locations, all concurrently. For instance, when observing a forest landscape, the brain simultaneously processes the movement of leaves, the shapes of trees, the depth between them, and the various shades of green. This enables a quick and...

The parallel RLC circuit is an arrangement where the resistor (R), inductor (L), and capacitor (C) are all connected to the same nodes and, as a result, share the same voltage across them. The parallel RLC circuit is analyzed in terms of admittance (Y), which reflects the ease with which current can flow. The admittance is given by: Resonance in a parallel RLC circuit occurs when the net reactance is zero, meaning the capacitive and inductive effects cancel each other out. This condition is...
