Parental Alleles

Parental alleles are alternative versions of a gene inherited from an individual’s biological parents, with one allele typically contributed by each parent at a genetic locus. During meiosis, homologous chromosomes segregate so gametes receive one allele, while crossing over can reshuffle nearby alleles before fertilization restores paired copies in the offspring. Comparing parental alleles helps explain homozygous and heterozygous genotypes, Mendelian inheritance patterns, and the transmission of traits through families. In biology, this concept supports pedigree analysis, linkage studies, genetic mapping, and research into how inherited variants contribute to health, disease risk, and population-level genetic variation.

Parental Care

2026

Many animals exhibit parental care behavior, including feeding, grooming, and protecting young offspring. Parental care is universal in mammals and birds, which often have young that are born relatively helpless. Several species of insects and fish, as well as some amphibians, also care for their young. Birds Parental care can occur even before hatching in birds, when parents sit on their eggs to incubate them. After hatching, the parents provide food for their offspring, and may continue to...

Multiple Allele Traits

For the same gene multiple alleles can interact to influence phenotypes like the shape and protein composition of an individual cells.By studying allele interactions on the molecular and cellular levels researchers can understand the resulting phenotypes and complications of human conditions like sickle cell trait, improving treatment. The ABO blood group system is a common example of multiple alleles in humans. This system includes three alleles called IA, IB, and i alleles, which combine in...

Parenting Styles

Diana Baumrind's four parenting styles — authoritarian, authoritative, neglectful, and permissive — each influence children's socio-emotional development differently. Authoritarian Parenting This style is strict and controlling, with little room for open dialogue. Authoritarian parents demand obedience and often enforce rules with minimal warmth. Children raised this way may lack social skills and initiative, usually comparing themselves to others unfavorably. Authoritative Parenting This...

Lethal Alleles

Agouti: A Lethal Allele Lucien Cuénot discovered lethal alleles in 1905 while studying the inheritance of coat color in mice. The agouti gene is responsible for the color of the coat in mice. This gene codes for an agouti-signaling protein, which is responsible for melanin distribution in mammals. The wild-type allele gives rise to gray-brown coat color in mice, while the mutant allele gives rise to yellow coat color. In addition to coat color, the agouti gene is associated with the yellow...

An Allele-specific Gene Expression Assay to Test the Functional Basis of Genetic Associations

Cited by 2 •

2010

Genetic associations often remain unexplained at a functional level. This method aims to assess the effect of phenotype-associated genetic markers on gene expression by analyzing cells heterozygous for transcribed SNPs. The technology allows accurate measurement by MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry to quantify allele-specific primer extension products.
