Pseudomonas Infection

Pseudomonas infection is an infection caused by bacteria of the genus Pseudomonas, most often the opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and is important because it can affect vulnerable tissues and resist treatment. The bacterium colonizes damaged or compromised surfaces, attaches to host cells, forms protective biofilms, and uses secreted toxins and enzymes to evade defenses and injure tissue. In biology and medicine, studying these infections clarifies host–pathogen interactions, antimicrobial resistance, and mechanisms of chronic disease, particularly in the lungs, wounds, and healthcare settings. This knowledge supports improved diagnostic methods, infection-control strategies, and therapies that target bacterial growth, virulence, or biofilm formation.

We describe the agar-beads method to establish persistent long-term chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa airway infection in the mouse model.

A Phage Therapy against Pseudomonas aeruginosa Infection in Zebrafish Embryos

The video demonstrates the phage therapy technique targeting Pseudomonas aeruginosa infection in cystic fibrosis zebrafish embryos. Phage therapy effectively diminishes bacterial load and mitigates proinflammatory immune responses in CF zebrafish embryos infected with bacteria, leading to reduced CF embryo lethality.

Assessing Pseudomonas syringae Infection Load in Arabidopsis thaliana Leaves

Source: Liu, X., et al. Bacterial Leaf Infiltration Assay for Fine Characterization of Plant Defense Responses using the Arabidopsis thaliana-Pseudomonas syringae Pathosystem. J. Vis. Exp. (2015).This video demonstrates a method to assess the bacterial load in Arabidopsis thaliana leaves infected with Pseudomonas syringae. Leaf discs from infected leaves are homogenized, serially diluted, and plated onto nutrient-rich agar to promote bacterial colony formation. Colony counts are then used to...

Source: de Vries, C. R., et.al. A Delayed Inoculation Model of Chronic Pseudomonas aeruginosa Wound Infection. J. Vis. Exp. (2020)This video demonstrates the delayed inoculation of luminescent Pseudomonas aeruginosa into a mouse bearing two full-thickness dorsal skin wounds covered by a transparent film dressing. This facilitates biofilm formation and the establishment of chronic infection. Regular bioluminescence monitoring enables quantification of bacterial burden and tracking of infection...
